Chapter 16 - The Glass Fortress

Thirty-six hours later, the storm had passed, replaced by the cruel, sterile sunlight of midtown Manhattan.

Daniel stood in the penthouse suite of Vance Tower—the 68-story glass monolith overlooking Central Park. His bruised knuckles were wrapped in white athletic tape; beneath his bespoke navy suit, he carried a deep purple contusion across his ribs.

Elena, his head of corporate intelligence, was typing furiously at a terminal across the mahogany conference table. Her face was gray with terror.

"Daniel, you need to see this," Elena said, her voice shaking. "We ran the forensic audit on the offshore shell accounts that Victoria set up before she was locked up. She didn't use normal banks. Every dollar was routed through a private medical conglomerate based out of a private clinic in Zurich."

"A medical conglomerate?" Daniel walked over, leaning over her shoulder. "For what? Cancer research? Gene therapy?"

"Cryonics and radical organ preservation," Elena said, turning the screen toward him. "The trust hasn't been paying off debt. It has been funding the intensive life-support system of a patient kept in an unlisted penthouse facility in Tribeca. A patient registered under the name *Julian Vance*."

Daniel stared at the monitor. The medical readouts were live. Brainwave activity: fluctuating. Cardiac function: mechanically maintained. Daily operational cost: four hundred thousand dollars.

The door to the conference room swung open. Margaret walked in, dressed in an immaculate ivory power suit, holding a velvet box lined with silk. She set the box on the conference table and opened it. Inside rested a single, heavy platinum signet ring encrusted with a deep blue sapphire.

"This was your grandfather's ring," Margaret said coldly. "It contains the private biometric decryption key to the entire offshore mainframe. For sixty years, I kept him sedated in that clinic, trapped between life and death, using Victoria's greed to monitor his handlers."

Daniel stared at her, horrified. "You kept him in a coma? You kept your own husband locked in an artificial vegetative state?!"

"I did what was necessary to keep you and your father alive!" Margaret slammed her cane against the floor. "Julian is a monster, Daniel! He was a black-market war profiteer who treated humans like livestock! Victoria discovered the clinic two years ago. She was trying to wake him up. And that is why she came after me."

Elena’s terminal suddenly let out an urgent, shrill alarm. The screens went red.

"Daniel!" Elena screamed. "The emergency bail petition! The appellate court just granted an expedited medical release for Victoria! She's out. She just walked out of Rikers Island!"
