Chapter 18 - The Poisoned Boardroom

At precisely four-forty-five PM, the 60th-floor boardroom of Vance Tower was an arena of silent terror. Twelve board members, men and women who controlled billions in global assets, sat around the sixty-foot obsidian table, their faces pale, sweating through their tailored shirts.
At the head of the table sat Victoria. Behind her stood two private security operators in dark gray suits, their jackets bulging with concealed firearms.
The double doors swung open with a resounding thud.
Daniel stepped into the room, his eyes burning with lethal certainty. Beside him, Margaret walked with slow, calculated precision, her heels clicking against the polished marble floor. She didn't use her cane. She walked upright, her spine straight as a broadsword, radiating the terrifying authority of a queen who had survived the fall of empires.
"Sit down, Victoria," Margaret said, her voice dropping the room’s temperature by twenty degrees. "You are sitting in the chair of the woman who built this empire while your mother was still begging on the streets of Vienna."
Victoria smiled, a venomous, triumphant grin. "Welcome, Margaret. I see the adrenaline has temporarily cleared the dementia. But unfortunately, the law does not care about temporary lucidity."
Victoria tossed a leather-bound legal dossier onto the obsidian table.
"The board has already reviewed the medical certifications. By unanimous preliminary vote, Margaret Vance has been stripped of her voting rights. Daniel Vance has been suspended from the Chief Executive role pending an independent forensic audit. The interim leadership passes to me, as the appointed conservator of the Vance Family Trust."
Daniel stepped forward, placing both hands flat on the cold table, leaning directly across from his ex-wife.
"You forgot one detail, Victoria," Daniel said softly, a dark smile playing at the corners of his lips.
Victoria’s eyes narrowed slightly. "And what detail is that, Daniel?"
"You assumed my grandmother kept Julian Vance in a coma in Zurich," Daniel whispered, pulling a small silver flash drive from his pocket and sliding it into the central conference projection console. "You assumed the Tribeca facility was where he slept."
The massive 4K video wall behind Victoria flickered to life.

It did not show an old man in a hospital bed. It showed the interior of a federal holding facility in Virginia—and sitting in an interrogation room, surrounded by Department of Justice agents, was Julian Vance’s lead physician, Dr. Sterling, handcuffed to the table, sobbing as he signed a full federal confession.
