Chapter 7 - The Trap Snaps Shut

The silence in the boardroom was absolute. Not a single breath was drawn; not a chair creaked.
Margaret leaned forward slightly in her wheelchair, her hands resting calmly on the armrests. The visible bruises on her wrists had been dusted with light cosmetic powder, but they remained faint, undeniable shadows of violence against her pale skin.
"Julian," Margaret said, her gaze fixing upon the vice chairman like a hawk sighting field mice. "You seem surprised to see me. Were you expecting me to be sedated in the west wing?"
Montgomery swallowed hard, his throat dry, his mind racing through catastrophic calculations. "Margaret... Madam Harrington! This is... we were told you were critically ill! We were only acting in the interest of the corporation—"
"You were acting in the interest of an offshore shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands under the name *Nautilus Holdings*," Marcus Vance interrupted, his voice booming with courtroom authority.
Marcus walked forward and dropped a heavy, three-inch stack of forensic financial binders onto the center of the mahogany table. The impact sounded like a gunshot.
"For the past nine months," Marcus announced, addressing the terrified board members, "Vice Chairman Montgomery and Mrs. Vanessa Harrington have conspired to systematically embezzle forty-two million dollars from the Harrington Maritime Foundation. Furthermore, they retained the services of Dr. Alan Vance—who, as of eight o'clock this morning, has had his medical license permanently suspended by the State Board of Medicine for prescribing controlled narcotics under fraudulent corporate billing."
Dr. Vance let out a squeak of terror and took two steps back toward the door, only to find an FBI agent quietly blocking the exit, his arms crossed over his chest.
"This is absurd!" Vanessa screamed, her voice losing every shred of its rehearsed fragility, escalating into pure, jagged hysteria. She stood up, knocking her leather chair backward. "Daniel is fabricating this! He's using corporate funds to frame me! I am his wife! Look at him—he brought his demented grandmother here as a prop!"
Daniel didn't shout. He didn't even look at Vanessa. He walked directly to the head of the table, past Montgomery, who stepped back instinctively, his hands trembling.
Daniel pressed a remote control on the conference podium.
The massive high-definition presentation monitors lining the walls flickered to life. But instead of financial quarterly reports, the screens displayed crystal-clear, high-definition security camera footage from the mansion's dining hall the night before.
The audio roared through the boardroom's surround-sound speakers.
On the screens, seventy high-society guests were laughing, holding glasses of champagne. Margaret sat in her wheelchair, smiling softly as the birthday cake was placed before her.
Then, the footage zoomed in.
Every director in the room gasped in visceral horror.
The screens clearly showed Vanessa stepping behind Margaret's chair. There was no hesitation. There was no provocation. There was only a cold, sickening smirk on Vanessa's face as she reached out, violently grabbed the ninety-year-old woman's silver hair, yanked her head back, and slammed her face down into the cake with brutal, deliberate force.
The sickening sound of the impact echoed through the room: *CRACK.*
Then came the audio of Vanessa’s laughter, followed by her grabbing another fistful of cake and grinding it into Margaret's scalp, whispering loud enough for the microphone to catch: *"Happy birthday, you old bitch. Enjoy your last party."*
Two female board members covered their faces, turning away from the screens in disgust. Harrison stood up, his face crimson with fury, pointing a shaking finger at Vanessa.
"You monster," Harrison whispered. "You vile, vicious monster!"
"That's not all," Daniel said, his voice deadly quiet.
He clicked the remote again.
A high-resolution photograph of Margaret's collarbone appeared on the monitors—five circular, distinct cigarette burns scarred into her flesh. Next to it was the toxicological report from St. Jude’s Medical Pavilion, signed by three independent forensic pathologists, highlighting the presence of chlorpromazine and lethal micro-doses of thallium.
"Attempted murder by systematic poisoning," Daniel announced, looking directly into Vanessa’s terrified, dilated eyes. "Elder abuse in the first degree. Corporate conspiracy. Extortion. Fraud."
Vanessa collapsed back against the wall, her chest heaving, her manicured fingers clawing at the wallpaper. "No... no, no, no! Daniel, please! It was Montgomery! Montgomery planned the whole thing! He approached me! He told me we could take the company! He gave me the chemical compounds!"
"You lying whore!" Montgomery roared, lunging forward across the table, his composure entirely shattered. "You were the one who demanded sixty percent of the offshore shares! You were the one who wanted her dead before Christmas!"

"Gentlemen," the lead FBI agent said, stepping forward between them, his badge gleaming under the fluorescent lights. "Save the depositions for the federal grand jury. Mr. Montgomery, Mrs. Harrington, Dr. Vance... you are all under arrest."
