Chapter 15 - CALEB'S FIRST CHRISTMAS HOMEChristmas morning arrived quietly.
No ballroom.
No catered reception.
No society guests.
Grant made pancakes badly.
Audrey laughed when he burned the first batch.
Caleb slept through almost everything.
Maria joined them for lunch.
So did Audrey's mother, Elaine.
For the first time, Grant heard stories about Thomas Bennett.
Thomas loved baseball.
Cheap roadside coffee.
Bruce Springsteen.
He had once driven from Connecticut to Ohio because Audrey wanted to see the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Grant listened.
This was the man erased from company history.
Later, Grant carried Caleb toward the Christmas tree.
“Someday,” he whispered, “you'll know both sides of your family.”
Audrey heard him.
