She had met Daniel in college.
He had been funny, stubborn, and obsessed with numbers.
They married in a courthouse ceremony because they couldn't afford a wedding.
Daniel had accepted the Stanford job believing it would finally give them stability.
Instead, it destroyed their future.
After his death, Lianna discovered she was pregnant.
The life insurance policy Daniel believed he had through Stanford Development mysteriously disappeared from company records.
His final paycheck was delayed.
His retirement account became trapped in an administrative dispute.
Lianna lost their apartment.
Then their savings.
Then nearly everything else.
Corbin listened quietly.
His family had not simply erased Daniel.
They had left his pregnant widow with nothing.
“I applied to dozens of jobs,” Lianna explained.
“Then your household agency called.”
Corbin looked at her.
“You didn't know this was my house?”
“Not until the first day.”
“Why did you stay?”
Lianna looked toward Austin.
“Because babies don't care about family history when they're hungry.”
