Chapter 1 - The Search Is Over

"How do you know where we live?" I demanded, my voice shaking with a sudden, overwhelming fear.

Arthur Whitmore slowly placed the telephone back onto its polished brass receiver.

The silence in the grand foyer was heavy enough to crush the breath right out of my lungs.

He leaned heavily on his silver-handled cane, his piercing blue eyes studying me with a complicated mixture of sorrow and deep regret.

"I have been searching for you and your sisters for three years, Caleb," he finally said, his voice barely above a whisper.

I grabbed Annie’s hand, pulling her slightly behind me, my protective instincts flaring up instantly.

"We don't know you," I shot back, calculating the distance to the heavy oak front door.

"You don't," Arthur agreed, taking a slow, agonizing step forward.

"But I knew your father, and I owed him a debt that money can never repay."

Before I could demand more answers, the heavy wooden doors swung open, and a man in a crisp medical uniform rushed inside carrying a large black bag.

"Mr. Whitmore, I got here as fast as I could," the man said, barely glancing at me and Annie.

"Dr. Evans, this is Caleb and Annie," Arthur instructed, his tone suddenly shifting to absolute authority.

"The address I gave you is their apartment."

"You are going to go there right now, and you are going to save their older sister, Grace."

My heart stopped at the mention of her name.

"How do you know her name?" I asked, feeling dizzy.

"There is no time to explain right now, son," Arthur said softly.

"Your sister is dying of a severe bacterial infection, and if Dr. Evans doesn't administer these antibiotics immediately, you will lose her tonight."

Panic completely overrode my suspicion.

Arthur signaled to a driver waiting outside the open doors.

"Get in the car, Caleb," the billionaire commanded gently.

"Let me save your family."
