Chapter 6 - Poisonous Lies

The next day, Julian cornered me in the sprawling garden while Arthur was away on business.
He towered over me, a cruel smirk twisting his face.
"You think you've won the lottery, don't you, kid?" he sneered.
"We just want to be safe," I said, trying to keep my voice steady.
Julian laughed, a harsh, grating sound.
"Safe?"
"You think my father is your savior?"
"He's a liar."
Julian leaned down so close I could smell the expensive cologne radiating off him.
"My father didn't just let your dad take the fall."
"My father is the one who ordered the hit on your parents' car, because your dad was threatening to expose the truth."
My stomach dropped, the world spinning violently around me.
"You're lying," I choked out.
"Am I?" Julian whispered.
"Go look in the floor safe in his study."
"The combination is my mother's birthday."
"Read the police reports he buried."
Julian walked away, leaving me standing alone in the manicured grass, my mind racing with terror.
Everything Arthur had told us felt perfect.

But what if it was just a brilliant, twisted lie to keep us under his control?
I knew I had to find out the truth before Grace fully recovered.
