Chapter 13 - The Fracture

I had spent three decades dealing with violent claimants who thought they could intimidate an investigator. I didn't flinch.

I stepped inside his swing, ducking beneath the trajectory of the heavy glass, and drove my tactical flashlight directly into his solar plexus.

Ryan gasped, the breath exploding from his lungs. The glass pitcher slipped from his fingers, shattering across the mahogany table in an explosion of water and shards.

Before he could recover, the lead FBI agent tackled him from behind, driving him face-first into the carpet.

The sound of Ryan’s nose breaking against the floor echoed in the small room.

“Down! Stay down!”

Handcuffs ratcheted tight around Ryan’s wrists with sharp, metallic clicks. Ryan lay on the floor, blood pouring from his nostrils onto the beige rug, spitting and cursing like a rabid dog.

“Carol! You bitch! You’ll rot in hell for this! I’ll kill you! I swear to God I’ll kill you!”

Frank Henderson walked past the struggling agents and stood beside me, breathing heavily. He looked down at Ryan with utter disgust. “Ryan Vance, you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, interstate transport of stolen controlled substances, and attempted murder under Title 18.”

“Frank,” I said, my voice shaking for the first time. “Room 412. Emily.”

We ran out of the conference room and down the hall.

Frank kicked open the door to Room 412.

The room was freezing. Emily lay in the center of the bed, pale as marble, her eyes half-open, staring blankly at the ceiling. An IV pump beside her bed was beeping frantically, its digital readout flashing red:

*OCCLUSION DETECTED – LINE 2.*

Beside the IV pole stood an empty syringe—a ten-milliliter syringe labeled *Heparin Sodium*.

The plunger was halfway down.

“Emily!” I cried, rushing to her side.

Her lips were tinged blue. Her breathing was shallow, a terrifying rattling sound deep in her chest.

Someone had already started the injection before we breached the conference room.
