Chapter 15 - The Spark

“Again!” Hale roared. “Three hundred! Push one milligram of epinephrine!”

The nurse slammed the syringe into the IV port.

“Clear!”

*THUMP.*

Emily’s body jerked again.

For three agonizing seconds, the room was silent except for the ventilation fan.

Then, a tiny, erratic blip appeared on the green monitor screen.

*BEEP.*

A pause.

*BEEP.*

Then another.

*BEEP... BEEP... BEEP.*

“Sinus rhythm restored,” the nurse whispered, letting out a ragged breath. “Heart rate ninety-two. Blood pressure rising—eighty-five over fifty-five.”

Dr. Hale slumped against the IV pole, his chest heaving, his gloves covered in blood and sweat. He looked over at me, his eyes bloodshot. “The Protamine stopped the Heparin. The clotting complex is infusing. She’s... she’s holding, Carol.”

I dropped to my knees on the linoleum floor, burying my face in my hands, crying so hard my entire body shook.

Twenty minutes later, two federal marshals wheeled a stretcher past the open door.

Ryan was strapped to it, wearing an orange transport suit, his broken nose splinted and taped, his eyes staring straight ahead at the ceiling.

He didn't look at Room 412. He didn't look at me.

He knew it was over.

Frank Henderson walked into the room, holding a small pink blanket.

Inside the blanket was Chloe.

She was sleeping peacefully, her tiny rosebud mouth opening and closing in her sleep, completely untouched by the poison, the greed, and the violence that had surrounded her first twenty-four hours on Earth.

Frank walked over and gently placed the baby in my arms.

I held my granddaughter against my chest, feeling the steady, warm rhythm of her heartbeat, and walked over to Emily’s bedside.

Emily’s eyes were open now. Weak, heavy, but completely clear.

She looked down at Chloe, then up at me.

“Mom,” she whispered, reaching out with her trembling, bruised hand.

May you like

I took her hand and pressed it against Chloe’s cheek. “You’re safe, Em. You’re both safe. The nightmare is over.”
