Chapter 16 - The Confession

Three days later, County General’s secure medical wing was bathed in pale morning sunshine.
Emily had been transferred back under Dr. Hale’s direct care. Her blood coagulation levels were finally returning to normal ranges, her liver enzymes had stabilized, and the color had returned to her cheeks.
Chloe was sleeping in the clear plastic bassinet beside her bed, wrapped in a yellow knit blanket I had brought from home.
Assistant United States Attorney Sarah Vance—no relation to Ryan, a fierce woman with sharp eyes and a steel-gray suit—sat in the visitor chair across from Emily and me, an open laptop resting on her knees.
“We cracked Laura Sims’s encrypted cloud server yesterday afternoon,” Sarah said, turning the screen toward us. “She turned state’s evidence thirty minutes after her father, Judge Sims, was suspended by the judicial conduct board.”
Emily swallowed hard, her voice still hoarse from the intubation tube. “What did she say?”
“Ryan approached her six months ago,” Sarah explained, her voice steady and matter-of-fact. “Apex Logistics had uncovered an eight-hundred-thousand-dollar deficit in Ryan’s accounts. He had been gambling on offshore cryptocurrency derivatives and lost everything. He was facing an internal corporate audit that would have sent him to federal prison for ten years.”
I closed my eyes. The oldest motive in the world: desperate, greedy stupidity.
“Laura was facing her own audit at Saint Jude’s,” Sarah continued. “She had misallocated research grant funds to cover luxury real estate purchases in Miami. Ryan proposed a solution that solved both their problems. A high-value life insurance payout combined with an experimental drug trial casualty grant. They split six point seven million dollars. Ryan takes the baby, uses the forged passports to move to a non-extradition country, and Laura writes it all off as an unpreventable maternal coagulopathy.”
“And Brenda?” I asked.
“Brenda was the logistical courier,” Sarah said. “She managed the physical drop-offs of the Warfarin powder and the cash reserves. She has already signed a plea agreement for twelve years without parole. Laura Sims is looking at twenty-five to life.”
“And Ryan?” Emily asked, her voice cracking slightly on his name.
Sarah Vance looked at my daughter with profound sympathy. “Attempted aggravated murder of a spouse, federal wire fraud, distribution of stolen controlled substances resulting in severe bodily harm, and child endangerment. The minimum sentence is forty-five years. He will die in ADX Florence, Emily. He will never touch this baby. He will never speak to you again.”
Emily looked down at her hands, where the faint indentations from her wedding ring were still visible on her pale skin.
She reached up, pulled the diamond ring off her finger, and dropped it into the plastic specimen cup on the bedside table.

“Give it to the victims’ restitution fund,” Emily said quietly. “I don't ever want to see it again.”
