Chapter 14 - Shadows Behind the Glass

The silence inside the subterranean vault was absolute, suffocating, broken only by the rapid, shallow sound of Emily’s breathing.

"You're lying," Victoria spat, her hands steady, the barrel of her gun locked onto Elena's forehead. "Arthur Vance had two daughters. That’s all. I know my father's life."

"You knew the fairytale your father bought for you with dirty blood money," Elena replied smoothly, taking a deliberate, measured step forward. She didn't flinch at the firearm aimed at her skull. "Thirty years ago, Arthur Vance and Julian’s father ran an illicit human trafficking and money-laundering pipeline through Central Europe. My mother was collateral damage—a young Ukrainian translator who was used, impregnated, and discarded like trash in a Vienna alley."

Elena’s eyes shifted to Emily, blazing with years of simmering, calculated hatred. "Julian knew the truth. When he found me living in squalor in Bucharest six years ago, he didn't exploit me—he enlightened me. He promised that the Vance bloodline would pay for every drop of our mother's suffering. He brought me into his circle. He taught me how to blend in, how to play the terrified, grateful victim."

"You helped him cut the balcony rail," Emily whispered, realization striking her like a physical shockwave. "It wasn't Julian who tampered with the stone balustrade the morning of my wedding. He had an alibi—he was at the altar! It was *you*!"

"I loosened the pins," Elena confessed without a trace of remorse. "I used diamond-tipped hydraulic shears to weaken the load-bearing supports. Julian was supposed to push you over during the vows, making it look like a tragic structural collapse. But your pathetic, alcoholic sister interfered and confronted him on the balcony early, ruining the timing."

Elena's lips curved into a wicked smirk. "You thought Julian went to prison because you outsmarted him? Julian allowed himself to be arrested. We needed the federal investigation to conclude so that the Vance estate would be legally consolidated under your name. We needed you to collect the life insurance, settle the board disputes, and liquidate your father’s foreign accounts."

"And now?" Victoria demanded, her voice vibrating with lethal fury.

"Now, the liquidation is complete. Ten billion dollars sits in the Vance Memorial Foundation accounts—accounts to which I, as Chief Administrator, hold sole international disbursement authority." Elena raised her silenced pistol, aligning the sights with Emily’s chest. "Julian is waiting on the rooftop helipad of the Vance Tower. He wants Clara. He wants the true heir to the Sterling-Vance dynasty. Give me the master decryption keys to the foundation accounts, Emily, or Victoria’s brain will decorate that concrete wall."

Before Elena could finish her sentence, Victoria made her move.

She didn't negotiate. Having lived through the guilt of nearly letting her sister die once before, Victoria wasn't about to let another monster touch her family. She fired twice.

The muffled *crack-crack* of the Glock echoed violently in the enclosed vault. But Elena was already moving. Anticipating the shot, she dropped into a combat roll, her own weapon spitting a silenced round that ripped through Victoria’s right shoulder.

Victoria cried out, spinning backward, her gun clattering across the floor. Emily lunged forward with raw, maternal fury, grabbing a heavy brass vault ledger and slamming it against Elena’s skull. The blow connected with a sickening crunch. Elena staggered, blood spraying from her temple, but she swung her pistol, the heavy steel frame striking Emily across the cheek, knocking her to her knees.

Elena wiped the blood from her eyes, breathing heavily, her gaze chillingly devoid of humanity. "You Vance women never learn," Elena hissed, raising the gun to Emily's forehead. "You think you're queens. But you're just prey."

*BANG.*

Elena’s body jerked violently. A crimson hole blossomed in the center of her tactical vest. She looked down in absolute disbelief, then slowly collapsed onto her side, revealing Marcus Hayes standing at the vault entrance, a smoking combat shotgun held at waist level.

"Miss Vance," Marcus said, his voice flat and steady. "We have a catastrophic breach at the penthouse. Julian has taken the child."
