Chapter 20 - Whispers Through the Static

The searchlights from the hovering helicopter pinned Victoria in a circle of blinding white light. Rain lashed across her face, stinging her eyes as she stood frozen, the gun in her hand suddenly feeling as useless as a plastic toy against the assault rifles leveled at her chest.
"Harrison Vance," Victoria whispered, her voice barely audible over the roaring rotors. "You were the one who signed the transfer orders. You orchestrated the prison breach."
Harrison stepped over the body of the fallen mercenary, adjusting the collar of his cashmere overcoat against the rain. "Arthur was weak, Victoria. He thought he could atone for our family’s corporate crimes by leaving the company to Emily and Victoria—two fragile girls who wanted to turn Vance Global into a humanitarian charity. A multi-billion-dollar empire cannot run on morality. It requires fire. It requires blood."
Harrison drew a polished chrome revolver from his coat. "Julian was an ambitious tool. Useful, but far too reckless. Pushing Emily off the balcony on her wedding day? Childish. Dramatic. A complete disaster that brought the federal government down upon our heads."
Julian looked up from the ground, his teeth bared in a feral snarl. "I built this network, Harrison! You wouldn't have a penny of the offshore accounts without my codes!"
"Which is why you are no longer necessary, Julian," Harrison said calmly.
Without breaking eye contact with Victoria, Harrison tilted the barrel of his revolver downward and pulled the trigger.
*BANG.*
The bullet tore through Julian Sterling's forehead. Julian’s body went limp, his cold blue eyes staring blankly up at the weeping sky, his reign of terror extinguished in a pool of dark, rain-diluted blood.
Victoria gasped, taking an involuntary step back toward the edge of the terrace.
"Now," Harrison said, turning his full, lethal attention to Victoria, "it’s time to close this chapter. The story tomorrow will be utterly heartbreaking: Julian Sterling escaped, returned to Blackwood Castle, murdered both Vance sisters in a fit of psychotic vengeance, and was tragically shot dead by the arriving authorities. I, as the surviving executor of the Vance estate, will assume full legal guardianship of little Clara. She will grow up with every luxury... under my absolute control."
Harrison raised the gun, aiming it square between Victoria’s eyes. "Goodbye, Victoria."
Down below, on the swaying nylon safety net, Emily climbed toward the stone cliff ledge, carrying Clara securely in her tactical sling. Her boots touched the wet granite path. Her fingers brushed against the tactical radio clipped to her vest.
The frequency suddenly crackled to life in her ear.
It wasn't Victoria. It wasn't Marcus.
It was a voice transmitted over the Vance family's private, encrypted emergency channel—a voice that was deep, raspy, breathing heavily through an oxygen mask, speaking from a location completely off the grid.
A voice Emily hadn't heard in two years. A voice that belonged to a man who was supposed to be buried in the family mausoleum.

*"Emily... my brave girl,"* the voice wheezed through the static, sending a shockwave of paralyzing terror through every nerve in her body. *"Do not let Harrison take the child. He doesn't know... that Clara is not Julian's daughter. She is mine. And I am coming back to take my kingdom."*
Up on the terrace above, a deafening gunshot echoed into the stormy night.
