Chapter 17 - The Ghost of Sterling Manor

Emily didn't wait for Marcus’s tactical signal. The sound of her daughter’s scream tore away every vestige of caution, every ounce of self-preservation. She charged up the spiral stone staircase, her combat boots pounding against the ancient slate steps.

"Emily, wait! Staggered entry!" Marcus yelled, following closely behind with his rifle raised, Victoria bringing up the rear, covering the stairwell flanks.

Emily kicked open the double oak doors leading out onto the fourth-floor terrace.

The scene was a horrific nightmare of déjà vu.

The wind howled off the Hudson River, whipping freezing rain across the wide stone balcony. Jagged lightning split the midnight sky, illuminating the terrifying four-story void below—the exact abyss Emily had plummeted into one year ago.

Standing right at the edge of the jagged, broken stone balustrade was Julian Sterling. In his left arm, he held baby Clara, wrapped in a pink cashmere blanket, sobbing hysterically from the biting cold. In his right hand, Julian casually held a detonator switch connected to two shaped C4 charges mounted to the remaining structural pillars of the terrace.

Flanking him were two heavily armed mercenaries in unmarked combat gear.

"Don't move," Julian commanded, his voice slicing through the roar of the gale. "One more step, and I release the grip on her blanket. A four-story drop into jagged granite rocks, Emily. You remember the sound your ribs made when they shattered on the terrace below? Imagine what that impact will do to six pounds of fragile infant bone."

Emily froze, raising her hands, water streaming down her face, mixing with tears of unadulterated agony. "Julian, please. Take the money. Take the foreign accounts. Elena gave you the access codes before she died. Let Clara go!"

Julian’s face tightened slightly at the mention of Elena’s death, but there was no sorrow in his eyes—only the cold calculation of a chess grandmaster sacrificing a pawn.

"Elena was a sentimental fool," Julian sneered, the rain plastering his dark hair across his forehead. "She thought this was about revenge for our dead mother. She thought this was about justice. This isn't about the past, Emily. This is about power. Your father built an empire on blood, and I am simply claiming the dividend."

"You're sick, Julian!" Victoria screamed from the doorway, her gun aimed directly at his heart. "You’re a cornered rat! The state police are five minutes away! Marcus’s tactical team has the entire perimeter surrounded!"

Julian let out a bitter, resonant laugh that echoed over the roaring storm. "State police? Perimeter teams? Look over the railing, Victoria. Look down at your brave little security convoy."

Marcus edged toward the eastern parapet, glancing down through the mist. His radio crackled with deafening static, followed by the sound of gunfire from the bottom of the cliffs.

"They're not state police," Marcus whispered, blood draining from his face. "It’s a private maritime extraction team. They came by boat up the Hudson."

"The board of directors of Sterling Innovations never abandoned me," Julian smiled, stepping backward so that the heels of his shoes hung over the dizzying four-story drop. "They funded this escape. They need Clara’s genetic key to unlock the biometric trusts your father buried in Switzerland. She is worth twelve billion dollars alive. But you, Emily... you are worth nothing at all."

Julian clicked the safety off the detonator.

"Drop your weapons," Julian whispered. "Or I drop your child."
