Chapter 11 - THE DEAD WOMAN’S PACKAGE

The yellow sneakers sat on the front porch step, dripping salt water onto the weathered pine boards.

Claire froze in the doorway, her coffee mug hovering inches from her lips. The morning sun was just cutting through the coastal fog of Harbor Light, casting long, pale shadows across their small yard. Theo was still inside, humming a cartoon theme song as he poured cereal into a blue ceramic bowl. Daniel was upstairs shaving, the low drone of his electric razor vibrating through the floorboards.

Everything was supposed to be over. Eleanor Mercer had been locked inside a high-security psychiatric wing sixty miles north, awaiting trial for attempted capital murder. The yacht had been impounded. The red ledger had been handed to federal prosecutors.

Yet there they were.

Claire set her mug down on the cedar railing, her hands trembling violently. She stepped outside barefoot. The damp chill of the morning soaked into her skin, but it was nothing compared to the ice creeping into her chest. She knelt before the shoes. They were tiny—size eleven toddler—bleached by sun and salt, the exact pair of bright yellow canvas sneakers Theo had been wearing the afternoon Eleanor shoved him over the mahogany railing of the *Northern Crown*.

The police had told Claire the shoes had been lost to the Atlantic currents.

Tucked inside the right sneaker was a damp, laminated card. Claire pulled it out with fingertips that felt entirely numb. Written in Eleanor’s unmistakable, razor-sharp cursive in permanent black ink was a single sentence:

*You dragged him from the water, Claire, but you forgot who built the cage.*

Before Claire could scream for Daniel, her phone vibrated in her back pocket. It was an unlisted number with a state government prefix. She answered, pressing the glass so hard against her ear that the plastic frame creaked.

"Claire Mercer?" A man's voice, sterile and hurried. "This is Detective Miller from the Cumberland County Sheriff's Department. I'm calling regarding your mother-in-law."

"What did she do?" Claire choked out, staring down at the dripping yellow shoes. "She sent someone here. She left Theo's—"

"Mrs. Mercer, listen to me carefully," the detective interrupted, his tone heavy with dread. "Eleanor Mercer was found dead in her cell forty minutes ago. Her throat was cut from ear to ear while the morning shift was changing guards. Whoever put those shoes on your porch didn't do it on her orders. They did it because she’s no longer here to protect you."
