Chapter 12 - BLOOD ON THE WILL

Daniel dropped the phone onto the kitchen island, his face drained of all color. The razor nick on his jaw was bleeding, a thin crimson bead rolling down his neck and soaking into the collar of his white cotton shirt.

"Dead?" Daniel whispered, his voice cracking like dry wood. "She's... she can't be dead. She owned half the state judges. She had three private security firms on retainer. You don't just walk into a maximum-security medical ward and slit Eleanor Mercer’s throat."

"Daniel, look at the shoes," Claire whispered, her voice dangerously calm as she stood by the kitchen window, watching Theo trace patterns with his spoon in his milk. She kept her back to their six-year-old son, shielding him from the view of the porch. "Those shoes didn't come from Eleanor. They came from whoever killed her."

Within two hours, Eleanor’s long-time estate attorney, Arthur Vance, arrived not in a luxury town car, but in an unmarked, rusted sedan. His tie was crooked, his thinning gray hair plastered to his forehead with sweat. He didn't offer condolences. He didn't even step past the kitchen foyer. He simply dropped a water-damaged black leather binder onto the dining table.

"She knew this was coming," Arthur said, his breath hitching. "The day she pushed Theo off that yacht, she wasn't having a psychotic break, Daniel. She was trying to hide him."

"Hide him?" Claire’s voice turned into a venomous snarl. She took two aggressive steps forward, her fists clenched. "She threw my six-year-old baby into fifty feet of freezing ocean water! She stood at the railing and watched him sink! Don't you dare sit here and paint that monster as a protector!"

"Look at the file!" Arthur shouted, slamming his palm against the leather cover. His eyes darted nervously toward the street outside, scanning every passing car. "Seven years ago, Daniel, you were in a coma after that car crash in Zurich. You were declared brain-dead for six days. Do you remember?"

Daniel swallowed hard, his hand instinctively touching the faint scar along his temple. "Yes. Claire was already pregnant. Eleanor told me she paid for the best experimental neuro-surgeons in Europe to pull me through."

"She lied," Arthur said, flipping open the binder to reveal a yellowed hospital intake form stamped with a red seal from an offshore clinic in the Cayman Islands. "You didn't father Theo, Daniel. And neither did an anonymous donor."

Claire felt the room spin. The edges of her vision blurred into tunnels of black ink. "What are you talking about? Daniel is his father! We conceived him right before the Zurich trip!"

Arthur looked up, his eyes hollowed by sheer terror. "Theo wasn't conceived naturally. While Daniel was in that coma, Eleanor received a visit from the true owner of the Mercer empire. The man who supposedly died ten years ago in the North Sea helicopter crash."

Arthur tapped a finger against a black-and-white photograph clipped to the file. It showed a man with Daniel’s jawline, but with eyes as cold and predatory as a winter squall.

"Julian," Daniel breathed, staggering back until his spine hit the refrigerator. "My older brother is dead. We buried his empty casket."

"Julian is alive," Arthur corrected in a whisper. "And Theo is his biological son."
