Chapter 20 - THE FINAL DROP

The iron door groaned under the impact of a hydraulic ram. The rivets popped one by one, screaming like wounded animals.

"Up the stairs! Go!" Daniel commanded, shoving Claire toward the winding cast-iron steps.

Claire carried Theo up the spiraling vortex of shadow and iron, her legs burning, her lungs screaming for oxygen. Outside, the storm had unleashed its fury. Thunder rolled across the Atlantic, shaking the very stone beneath their feet.

When they burst through the trapdoor into the lantern room, the wind hit them like a physical blow. The massive Fresnel lens rotated silently, sweeping blinding beams of white light across the raging ocean below.

Daniel reached the top seconds later, his face gray with blood loss. He dragged the heavy braided steel rescue cable toward the emergency hatch. He hooked the carabiner securely around Claire’s tactical harness and looped Theo tightly to her chest.

"Listen to me," Daniel shouted over the gale-force wind. "When you reach the ledge, hit the flare in the emergency box. The Coast Guard cutter out of Portland is monitoring the distress frequency. They’ll see the light."

"Daniel, please," Claire wept, her fingers clutching his torn shirt.

The trapdoor behind them was kicked open with a deafening crash.

Julian Mercer hauled himself into the lantern room, soaked in rain, his eyes bloodshot and feral. In his hand, he held a sleek silver automatic pistol. Behind him stood two mercenaries clad in black tactical gear.

"End of the line, family," Julian sneered, raising the gun directly at Theo's head. "Hand the boy over, Claire. My medical team is waiting below. He won't feel a thing after the first sedative."

"He's not your match, Julian!" Daniel roared, stepping directly into the line of fire, shielding Claire and Theo with his body. "Marcus Vance gave us the clinical logs! Eleanor swapped the embryos! Theo is my biological son! If you take his marrow, your body will reject it and you’ll die in agony within hours!"

Julian froze. For a split second, a flicker of pure, unadulterated panic flashed across his hollowed face. "You're lying. Eleanor wouldn't dare."

"She hated you, Julian!" Claire yelled, her voice cutting through the storm like a blade. "She threw him off that yacht so you couldn't murder him! You're already dead! You've been dead for ten years!"

Julian’s face twisted into an expression of demonic rage. "Then nobody gets the Mercer name!"

Julian pulled the trigger.

Daniel lunged forward, tackling Julian around the waist. The gunshot shattered the thick glass pane of the lantern room, sending shards of crystal raining down into the void. Daniel and Julian crashed against the outer railing, wrestling for the weapon.

"Claire! JUMP!" Daniel screamed at the top of his lungs, his hand slamming down on the emergency release lever.

Claire didn't hesitate. Trusting her husband with every fiber of her being, she leaped out into the black abyss of the storm, Theo clutched against her heart.

The wind screamed in her ears as the zip-line screamed down the steel cable. Sparks showered the darkness. Below them, the violent black waves surged against the jagged rocks. Behind them, at the top of the tower, Daniel slammed Julian’s head against the iron railing, wrenching the gun from his grip.

With a final, desperate roar, Daniel kicked Julian’s legs out from under him.

Julian Mercer tumbled backward through the shattered glass, his screams swallowed instantly by the roaring tempest as he plummeted ninety feet into the churning, rocky surf below.

Claire and Theo hit the rescue ledge with a jarring thud, the emergency brake catching them just feet above the spray. Claire scrambled to her feet, tearing open the emergency box on the rock wall and striking the maritime flare. Brilliant crimson phosphorus hissed to life, painting the sea and sky in blinding red fire.

High above, standing on the shattered catwalk of the lighthouse, Daniel looked down at the red light. He raised his hand, signaling he was alive.

The nightmare was finally over. The Mercer empire was destroyed. Julian was gone. Eleanor was gone.

Claire wept with relief, sinking to her knees on the cold wet stone, rocking Theo back and forth as the distant sirens of the Coast Guard cutter pierced the storm.

"We did it, Theo," Claire whispered, kissing his wet forehead. "We're safe. Daddy did it."

Theo pulled back slowly. In the harsh crimson glare of the emergency flare, his face was completely emotionless. His eyes—usually so warm and bright—looked flat, hollow, and chillingly familiar.

Theo reached into his small jacket pocket and pulled out a sleek, black metallic transponder that had been blinking green the entire time.

Theo looked up at Claire with an eerie, calm smile that made her blood freeze solid.

"Mommy," Theo whispered softly, his voice devoid of any childish warmth. "Uncle Julian said when the flare turned red, I had to give you this message."

Theo pressed a button on the transponder. A pre-recorded voice crackled through the tiny speaker—not Julian's voice, and not Eleanor's.

It was Daniel's voice, recorded years ago:
