Chapter 1 - The Woman Behind His Door

Blackwood Manor had always been a house built to impress people rather than comfort them. Standing on nearly forty acres outside Greenwich, Connecticut, the sprawling stone estate had twenty-two bedrooms, an indoor pool, a private theater, and hallways wide enough to make an ordinary person feel insignificant beneath the portraits of generations of Blackwoods staring down from gilded frames.

Elena Carter had worked there for almost three years, yet she still sometimes felt as though the house were quietly reminding her that she did not belong in it. Every morning she tied her dark hair into a neat bun, buttoned her simple black-and-white uniform, and entered rooms filled with objects worth more than the apartment where she had grown up in Queens.

She never complained.

At twenty-nine, Elena understood that pride did not pay hospital bills or rent, and after her mother had become seriously ill two years earlier, the Blackwood salary had kept their small family from losing everything. She had accepted the long hours, the strict rules, and even the cold glances of Victoria Blackwood, the sixty-four-year-old matriarch who believed the people employed by the family should move through the manor as silently as furniture.

There was only one complication Elena had never expected.

Adrian Blackwood.

At thirty-eight, Adrian was the billionaire chairman of Blackwood Global, a logistics and technology empire started by his grandfather after World War II. Newspapers described him as disciplined, private, and impossible to read. Business magazines printed his face beside headlines about billion-dollar acquisitions, while financial commentators debated which company he would buy next.

Elena knew another version of him.

She knew Adrian drank his coffee without sugar when he was worried but added one spoon when he had slept well. She knew he loosened his tie whenever a board meeting had gone badly. She knew he hated the enormous portrait of his great-grandfather hanging above the fireplace because the man had apparently been cruel to everyone who worked for him.

Most dangerously, Elena knew what Adrian looked like when he smiled only for her.

Their relationship had not begun with grand gestures.

It had started with conversations.

One snowy evening the previous winter, Elena had found Adrian alone in the kitchen making a terrible grilled cheese sandwich after the staff had gone home. He had burned one side so badly that smoke curled toward the ceiling.

“You run a multinational company,” Elena had said, trying not to laugh. “How can bread defeat you?”

Adrian had stared at the blackened sandwich.

“Bread has fewer shareholders.”

Elena had laughed.

That laugh changed something between them.

Over the following months, brief conversations became longer ones. Adrian began coming home earlier. Elena stopped pretending she did not notice when he found reasons to pass through whatever room she happened to be cleaning.

Neither of them spoke openly about what was happening.

Until the afternoon everything changed.

Rain struck the tall windows of Adrian’s private study as Elena entered carrying a silver tray with coffee and several documents his assistant had left downstairs. Adrian stood near his desk, his jacket hanging over the back of his chair.

“You should be at the city office,” Elena said.

“I canceled the rest of the afternoon.”

“That doesn’t sound like you.”

“It isn’t.”

She placed the tray down.

Adrian watched her carefully.

His silence made Elena nervous.

“What?”

“My mother invited the Hart family to dinner tonight.”

Elena’s hand stopped above the coffee pot.

Everyone in the household knew about the Harts. Charles Hart owned one of the largest private banking groups on the East Coast, and his daughter Vanessa had appeared beside Adrian at charity dinners for years.

Victoria Blackwood had made no secret of what she wanted.

A marriage between the families.

Elena looked down.

“I suppose you should get ready.”

“I’m not marrying Vanessa.”

“That isn’t my business.”

“You know it is.”

Elena turned toward him.

“Adrian.”

He crossed the room slowly.

“You keep calling me Mr. Blackwood whenever you’re afraid.”

“I work for your family.”

“You work in my house.”

“Your mother would say those are the same thing.”

“My mother doesn’t decide who I love.”

The words seemed to stop the rain.

Elena stared at him.

Adrian stepped closer.

For months they had carefully avoided saying exactly what lived between them. Suddenly there was nowhere left to hide.

“Elena,” he said quietly, “I am tired of pretending.”

Her eyes filled despite her effort to stop them.

“You don’t understand what happens to someone like me if this goes wrong.”

“I do.”

“No, you don’t. You remain Adrian Blackwood. I become the maid who tried to seduce a billionaire.”

His jaw tightened.

“Then I’ll tell anyone willing to listen that I was the one who fell first.”

Elena shook her head, but Adrian took her hands.

“I love you.”

She closed her eyes.

Those three words were more frightening than any insult Victoria Blackwood could have thrown at her.

When Elena finally looked at him again, the distance between them disappeared.

Adrian wrapped his arms around her.

For one brief moment, the enormous mansion no longer mattered.

Neither did the money.

Neither did the difference in their worlds.

Then the study door slammed open.

Elena jerked away.

Victoria Blackwood stood in the doorway wearing a burgundy designer dress and pearls, her face frozen in disbelief.

Beside her stood Vanessa Hart.

Vanessa wore a brilliant yellow dress that looked almost absurdly bright against the dark wood of the study.

Nobody spoke for two seconds.

Then Victoria’s face changed.

“What,” she whispered, “is this?”

Adrian stepped forward.

“Mother—”

Victoria moved faster than anyone expected.

She marched directly toward Elena, seized her by the upper arm, and pulled her away from Adrian.

“Get your hands off him!”

“Mrs. Blackwood—”

Victoria slapped Elena across the face.

The crack echoed through the study.

Elena stumbled against the corner of the desk.

Vanessa gasped, although there was something almost satisfied in her expression.

Victoria pointed directly at Elena.

“Who do you think you are?”

Elena’s cheek burned.

She said nothing.

Victoria raised her hand again.

Adrian caught her wrist.

“Enough.”

His voice had changed.

Victoria stared at her son.

“Release me.”

“You will not touch her again.”

“She is an employee!”

“She is a human being.”

“She is manipulating you!”

Victoria tried to pull free and lunged toward Elena again.

Adrian moved between them.

The next few seconds happened too quickly.

Victoria swung toward Elena.

Adrian reacted instinctively, his open hand striking his mother’s cheek as he forced himself between the two women.

Silence swallowed the room.

Adrian stared at his own hand.

Shock immediately crossed his face.

Victoria touched her cheek.

“You hit me.”

Adrian’s breathing grew uneven.

“You were trying to hurt her.”

“You hit your mother for a servant.”

Elena stepped forward.

“Adrian, stop.”

But Vanessa suddenly moved.

“You destroyed everything!”

She rushed around Adrian and slapped Elena.

Elena cried out.

Adrian spun.

“Vanessa!”

Vanessa lifted her hand again, but Adrian shoved her away before she could reach Elena.

She stumbled backward into one of the tall bookshelves.

Several leather-bound books crashed onto the floor. A framed photograph shattered against the hardwood.

Vanessa screamed.

Victoria charged toward her son.

“You animal!”

Adrian turned just as she raised her hand.

He blocked her arm and pushed her backward with his leg and body, desperate to stop the attack before it reached Elena again.

Victoria lost her balance and fell onto the thick Persian rug beside a leather chair.

Everything stopped.

Rain hammered the windows.

Books covered the floor.

Vanessa sat against the shelf in disbelief.

Victoria stared at her son as though she no longer recognized him.

And Elena stood beside the desk, one hand pressed against her burning cheek.

Adrian slowly moved toward her.

This time, he did not touch anyone else.

He simply stood in front of Elena like a wall.

His voice was low.

“Both of you leave.”

Victoria pushed herself upright.

“You have no idea what you just threw away.”

Adrian looked at Elena.

Then back at his mother.

“I know exactly what I’m choosing.”

Victoria’s eyes narrowed.

“You think this ends in this room?”

“No.”

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“I think it begins here.”

Victoria looked at Elena one final time.

And somehow that look frightened Elena more than the slap.

Because the anger had disappeared.

In its place was calculation.

Victoria straightened her dress.

“Very well.”

She walked toward the door.

Vanessa followed, shaking with humiliation.

Before Victoria disappeared into the hallway, she turned toward her son.

“There is a Blackwood Global board meeting tomorrow morning.”

Adrian frowned.

Victoria smiled without warmth.

“You may want to attend.”

Then she closed the door behind her.

Adrian stared after her.

Elena felt something inside her turn cold.

“What did she mean?”

Adrian did not answer immediately.

For the first time since Elena had known him, the most powerful man in the house looked genuinely afraid.

May you like

Finally, he whispered, “It means my mother has already planned her next move.”

And downstairs, somewhere beyond the walls of the study, a phone began ringing.
