Chapter 2 - The Morning Everything Changed

For nearly a minute after Victoria left the study, Adrian and Elena remained completely still.

The room looked like the aftermath of a storm that had somehow happened indoors. Three books lay open on the floor beneath the damaged shelf. Broken glass glittered around the silver frame Vanessa had knocked down, and Adrian’s coffee had spilled across several documents on the desk.

Elena barely noticed any of it.

Her cheek still burned where Victoria and Vanessa had struck her, but humiliation hurt more than the physical pain.

“I should leave,” she said.

Adrian immediately turned.

“No.”

“I mean this house.”

“Elena.”

“I knew this would happen.”

“You knew my mother would attack you?”

“I knew I would become a weapon people could use against you.”

Adrian came closer but stopped before touching her.

After everything that had happened, even that small hesitation mattered.

“I am sorry.”

Elena looked at him.

“For what?”

“For losing control.”

The fury had drained from his face, leaving something heavier behind.

“I should have protected you without becoming part of the violence.”

Elena swallowed.

She had never expected Adrian Blackwood to apologize for anything.

He looked toward the door.

“What my mother did was unacceptable. What Vanessa did was unacceptable. And what happened after that cannot happen again.”

Elena lowered her eyes.

“You still hit your mother because of me.”

“No. I reacted because she was attacking you. But I’m responsible for my reaction.”

He took a slow breath.

“Those are two different things.”

Before Elena could answer, a knock sounded.

Adrian’s longtime house manager, Samuel Whitmore, entered cautiously.

Samuel was sixty-two, gray-haired, and had worked for the Blackwood family since Adrian had been a teenager.

His eyes moved across the broken room.

“I heard shouting.”

Adrian nodded.

“Call Dr. Mason and ask her to examine Elena.”

“I don’t need a doctor,” Elena said.

“You were struck twice.”

“I’m fine.”

Samuel gave her a gentle look.

“Then let the doctor confirm that.”

Adrian continued.

“Also instruct security that my mother and Vanessa Hart are not allowed into the west wing without my permission.”

Samuel’s eyebrows lifted.

“Your mother lives here.”

“Not anymore.”

Elena stared at him.

Samuel did not argue.

“I’ll handle it.”

He disappeared.

Elena shook her head.

“You can’t throw your mother out of her family home because of me.”

“This is my house.”

“Adrian—”

“She crossed a line.”

Elena pressed her fingers against her forehead.

She suddenly felt exhausted.

“You don’t understand what she can do to me.”

Adrian’s expression softened.

“Then tell me.”

Elena laughed bitterly.

“She can ruin my reputation before breakfast.”

She gestured toward the massive windows.

“You think newspapers are going to say a billionaire fell in love with a hardworking woman who happened to work in his home?”

Her voice broke.

“They’ll say I targeted you. They’ll say I climbed into your bed for money. They’ll find pictures of the apartment where I grew up and call my family poor. They’ll find my mother’s hospital debt. They’ll decide every difficult thing that ever happened to me was part of some plan.”

Adrian said nothing.

Because they both knew she was right.

At 7:12 the following morning, the first article appeared.

HOUSEKEEPER AT CENTER OF BLACKWOOD FAMILY MELTDOWN.

By eight, there were twelve more.

One entertainment website claimed Elena had been secretly seeing Adrian for a year.

Another described her as “an ambitious domestic employee.”

A gossip account posted an old photograph taken from Elena’s social media page showing her standing beside her mother at Coney Island.

By 8:30, reporters were parked outside Blackwood Manor.

Elena watched from an upstairs window as camera crews gathered beside the iron gates.

Her stomach twisted.

Someone had leaked everything.

And there was only one person who had both the motive and the connections to do it so quickly.

Victoria.

Downstairs, Adrian stood in the breakfast room wearing a charcoal suit while his chief of staff, Marcus Hale, spoke rapidly into two phones.

“The board meeting has been moved to nine-thirty,” Marcus said. “Your mother requested an emergency governance review.”

“On what grounds?”

“Instability.”

Adrian laughed once.

“Meaning?”

“She claims your personal conduct jeopardizes the pending Hart merger.”

Elena entered the room.

The men stopped talking.

Adrian looked at her.

She was no longer wearing her maid uniform.

Instead, Elena wore black pants, a cream sweater, and the coat she normally used when traveling into the city.

Adrian’s face tightened.

“You’re leaving.”

“I’m going to my mother’s apartment.”

“No.”

“Elena.”

He crossed toward her.

“Reporters are outside.”

“Exactly.”

“I’ll have someone drive you through the service exit.”

“That isn’t what I mean.”

She took a folded sheet of paper from her pocket.

Adrian stared at it.

“What is that?”

“My resignation.”

The word landed between them.

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“I’m not accepting it.”

“You don’t have a choice.”

“I’m your employer.”

“Not anymore.”

Marcus quietly walked out of the room.

Elena placed the letter on the table.

“I will not stay here while the entire company collapses around you.”

“My company is not collapsing.”

“Your board is meeting because of me.”

“My board is meeting because my mother wants control.”

“And I gave her the excuse.”

Adrian stepped closer.

“No. She created one.”

Elena looked into his eyes.

“Do you love me enough to let me leave?”

That stopped him.

Her voice became softer.

“If this is real, Adrian, then I cannot remain here as your employee.”

He frowned.

“What are you saying?”

“I’m saying you cannot publicly claim I am the woman you love while I still collect a paycheck from your household.”

For several seconds, Adrian simply watched her.

Then the tension in his shoulders changed.

He understood.

“You’re not ending this.”

“I don’t know what this is yet.”

“Elena.”

“I love you too.”

It was the first time she had said it.

Adrian stopped breathing.

Elena’s eyes filled.

“But if I stay under this roof right now, your mother controls the story. I become exactly what she says I am.”

She pushed the resignation letter toward him.

“I need to stand beside you because I choose to, not because you employ me.”

Adrian slowly picked up the letter.

Then he tore it in half.

Elena stared at him.

“What are you doing?”

“Accepting your resignation.”

“That is a strange way to accept something.”

A faint smile appeared.

“I don’t want a piece of paper reminding me that you ever had to ask permission to leave.”

The smile disappeared as quickly as it had come.

“I’ll have security take you wherever you want.”

Elena nodded.

Then Adrian’s phone rang.

Marcus’s name appeared.

He answered.

“Yes?”

Marcus sounded breathless.

“Adrian, you need to turn on CNBC.”

Adrian grabbed the remote.

A financial news anchor appeared on the screen.

Behind her was a photograph of Blackwood Global headquarters in Manhattan.

“Breaking this morning,” the anchor said, “sources confirm Blackwood Global board members will consider a temporary vote to restrict Chairman Adrian Blackwood’s executive authority amid concerns regarding the proposed Hart Capital partnership.”

Elena looked at Adrian.

His jaw tightened.

The anchor continued.

“Victoria Blackwood, the chairman’s mother and holder of significant family voting rights, arrived in Manhattan approximately twenty minutes ago.”

Adrian muted the television.

“She didn’t sleep.”

Elena shook her head.

“She planned this before yesterday.”

Adrian looked at her.

The same thought had occurred to him.

An hour later, Elena sat inside a black SUV as it passed through the rear gates of Blackwood Manor.

Reporters never saw her leave.

Rain had stopped, but the sky remained gray.

She watched the mansion disappear behind the trees.

Her phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

Elena opened the message.

LEAVING THE HOUSE WON’T SAVE HIM.

A second message arrived.

IF YOU REALLY LOVE ADRIAN, STAY AWAY FROM HIM.

Elena stared at the screen.

Then a photograph appeared.

It showed her father.

Thomas Carter.

The picture had been taken nearly fifteen years earlier.

He was standing outside Blackwood Global headquarters.

Elena’s blood ran cold.

Her father had died when she was sixteen.

And he had never told her he had worked for the Blackwood family.

Beneath the photograph were six words.

ASK WHAT VICTORIA DID TO HIM.

Elena stopped breathing.

“Ma’am?” the driver asked from the front seat. “Everything okay?”

Elena looked again at the photograph.

A forgotten memory suddenly returned.

Her father coming home late.

Her parents arguing behind a closed kitchen door.

A newspaper folded beneath his arm.

And one sentence she had heard him say before her mother forced her back upstairs.

“I found where the money went.”

Elena’s fingers tightened around the phone.

The scandal surrounding her relationship with Adrian suddenly felt very small.

May you like

Because someone had just opened a door into a past her family had spent fifteen years refusing to discuss.

And on the other side of that door stood Victoria Blackwood.
