Chapter 4 - The Gala Victoria Refused To Lose

By Friday evening, New York had turned Elena Carter into a story.

Some articles called her Adrian Blackwood’s secret lover. Others referred to her as the “mansion maid who captured a billionaire.” Photographers camped outside Rose Carter’s apartment building, forcing Elena and her mother to keep the curtains closed even during the day.

Elena stopped reading comments after discovering strangers debating whether her clothes looked expensive enough to prove she had been planning the relationship for years.

Money, she realized, gave people permission to invent motives for anyone who did not have it.

Meanwhile, Blackwood Global continued sliding toward open civil war.

Adrian still controlled daily operations, but Victoria had persuaded seven directors to support a vote restricting his ability to negotiate major transactions. One additional vote would effectively make him chairman in name while transferring real power to an emergency committee controlled by his mother.

The critical vote was scheduled for Monday.

Victoria, however, had another battlefield prepared first.

The Blackwood Foundation Gala.

Every September, almost eight hundred executives, politicians, athletes, and donors gathered inside the Grand Meridian Hotel in Manhattan for the family’s largest charity event.

Adrian wanted to cancel.

Victoria refused.

More importantly, the foundation board refused.

Canceling during a corporate crisis, they argued, would create even more damaging headlines.

By seven Saturday evening, black SUVs lined Fifth Avenue outside the Grand Meridian.

Inside, crystal chandeliers hung above tables decorated with white roses. Television crews waited behind velvet ropes. A large American flag stood beside the stage where the Blackwood Foundation traditionally announced its annual grants.

Victoria arrived wearing silver.

Vanessa Hart wore yellow again.

It was not the same dress she had worn in Adrian’s study, but the message felt deliberate.

The two women posed together for photographs.

“Elena Carter will not attend,” Victoria told a reporter who shouted a question from behind the barrier. “Tonight is about charity, not gossip.”

She smiled as though she had already won.

Twenty minutes later, Adrian stepped from his car.

He came alone.

Cameras exploded.

“Mr. Blackwood, are you engaged to Vanessa Hart?”

“Did a member of your household assault your mother?”

“Is Elena Carter pregnant?”

Adrian stopped.

That final question hardened his expression.

He turned directly toward the cameras.

“There is no engagement.”

Reporters shouted louder.

Adrian continued walking.

Inside the ballroom, Victoria intercepted him before he reached the main tables.

“You should have entered with Vanessa.”

“I would rather enter with a tax auditor.”

Victoria’s smile remained fixed for nearby guests.

“You are embarrassing yourself.”

“You leaked Elena’s identity.”

“I protected this family.”

“You exposed a private employee to international media.”

“She stopped being private when she put her hands on you.”

Adrian stared at her.

“Be careful.”

Victoria’s smile weakened.

“Is that a threat?”

“No.”

He leaned closer.

“It is advice.”

Before she could answer, the ballroom entrance changed.

Heads began turning.

Whispers moved through the crowd.

Victoria looked toward the doors.

Elena Carter had arrived.

She wore a midnight-blue evening gown.

Nothing about it was extravagant. It had been borrowed from a stylist Marcus knew and altered that afternoon. Elena’s hair fell loosely over her shoulders instead of being tied in the bun most people associated with photographs from Blackwood Manor.

Rose walked beside her.

For one stunned second, Victoria could not speak.

Adrian could.

He smiled.

It was the first genuine smile anyone had seen on his face all week.

“You came.”

Elena stopped in front of him.

“You told me once you were tired of pretending.”

Adrian held out his hand.

Elena looked at it.

Then took it.

Cameras captured everything.

Victoria stepped forward.

“What are you doing here?”

Elena turned calmly.

“Attending a charity gala.”

“You were not invited.”

Adrian answered.

“She was invited by the chairman.”

Vanessa appeared beside Victoria.

“You enjoy humiliating people, don’t you?”

Elena looked at her.

“I came to stop being humiliated.”

Vanessa’s expression sharpened.

“This isn’t your world.”

“No.”

Elena glanced around the ballroom.

“But apparently everyone in this world has spent a week talking about me.”

Adrian almost smiled again.

Victoria moved closer.

“Leave.”

Elena did not move.

Instead, she reached into her evening bag.

For a moment Victoria’s eyes dropped toward it.

Fear.

Small but unmistakable.

Elena noticed.

She removed nothing more dangerous than a folded gala program.

But now she knew.

Victoria believed Elena had something.

The dinner began.

For nearly ninety minutes, speeches and auctions continued under a layer of tension thick enough to feel physical.

Then Victoria went to the stage.

Adrian frowned.

Her name was not on the program.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” Victoria began, “the Blackwood family has survived nearly a century because we understand that legacy requires partnership.”

Adrian slowly stood.

Elena touched his sleeve.

“Wait.”

Victoria continued.

“Tonight I am delighted to share that our families have begun discussions regarding a future partnership between Blackwood Global and Hart Capital.”

Applause rose.

Charles Hart stood beside his daughter.

Vanessa smiled.

Then Victoria added the sentence Adrian had feared.

“And we hope this professional partnership will soon be joined by a personal one.”

Gasps and excited whispers spread across the ballroom.

Vanessa looked toward Adrian.

Victoria lifted her champagne glass.

“To Adrian and Vanessa.”

Hundreds of guests followed.

Adrian remained seated.

Elena felt his hand tighten.

Then he stood.

He walked toward the stage.

Victoria’s smile faltered.

Adrian took the microphone.

“My mother is correct about one thing.”

The room became quiet.

“Legacy does require honesty.”

Victoria stared at him.

Adrian looked across hundreds of guests.

“There is no engagement between Vanessa Hart and me.”

The ballroom erupted in whispers.

Vanessa’s face turned white.

Adrian continued.

“There never has been.”

Charles Hart stood.

Victoria moved toward the microphone.

Adrian stepped away from her.

“And because my private life has been turned into public entertainment without my consent, I will say one thing clearly.”

He looked toward Elena.

“I love Elena Carter.”

The room went silent.

Elena felt every eye turn toward her.

Adrian’s voice remained steady.

“She no longer works for my household. She owes me nothing. I owe her an apology for allowing people connected to my family to treat her as though her profession made her less deserving of respect.”

Victoria whispered, “Stop.”

Adrian heard her.

He did not stop.

“Elena’s father also worked for Blackwood Global.”

Victoria’s face changed.

That single sentence had more effect than anything Adrian had said before it.

Elena watched her closely.

Adrian continued.

“His name was Thomas Carter.”

Some older executives turned toward one another.

Charles Hart frowned.

Victoria reached for Adrian’s arm.

He stepped away.

“We are reviewing circumstances surrounding his departure from the company fifteen years ago.”

Victoria seized the microphone.

“That has nothing to do with tonight.”

Elena saw panic beneath her mother-in-law-to-never-be’s perfect expression.

Adrian looked at her.

“I think it has everything to do with tonight.”

Then another voice came from the tables.

“Adrian.”

An elderly man stood near the back of the ballroom.

Elena recognized him from old corporate photographs.

Daniel Mercer.

Former chief financial officer of Blackwood Global.

He had retired eleven years earlier.

Victoria stared at him.

Mercer slowly walked toward the stage.

“If you are reopening Thomas Carter’s case,” he said, “you need to speak with me.”

Victoria’s face went completely still.

Mercer looked directly at Elena.

“Your father was telling the truth.”

The ballroom fell silent again.

Elena’s pulse hammered.

May you like

Victoria stepped backward.

And for the first time since this war began, Adrian’s mother looked as though she understood that she might lose.
