Chapter 4 - The Fourth Birthday Execution

The word *oblivious* echoed in Daniel’s ears like a death sentence. Every flight he had boarded, every merger he had toasted with vintage scotch, every time he had kissed Evelyn’s cheek on the tarmac while she whispered, *“Go conquer the world, my love, Clara and I will be waiting,”* flashed before his eyes in hideous, mocking clarity.
He had conquered the world while a viper consumed his child.
"Why today?" Daniel choked out, his throat burning as he gripped the edge of the nurses' station. "Why do it at her birthday party? In front of two hundred people?"
Detective Vance walked to the large window overlooking the rain-lashed hospital courtyard. "Because today was the deadline, Daniel. Under Harrison Sterling’s trust terms, the audit clause activated on Clara’s fourth birthday."
Daniel’s head snapped up. "The mandatory physical."
"Precisely," Vance said, turning back around. "Old man Sterling wasn't stupid. He knew corporate sharks might try to manipulate his granddaughter. The trust mandated that on her fourth birthday, Clara had to undergo a comprehensive physical examination by an independent board of Sterling-appointed pediatricians before the trust’s quarterly disbursements began. That appointment was scheduled for tomorrow morning at nine o'clock at Columbia Presbyterian."
Daniel felt the blood drain from his face. "The micro-fractures. The bruises. The moment those doctors touched her..."
"The game would be over," Vance finished. "Evelyn would have been arrested on felony child abuse charges. The trust would have severed all Montgomery ties, clawed back every cent she had spent, and Daniel Vale would have filed for divorce within the hour. She was backed into a corner. If Clara died tonight, there would be no routine pediatric audit. The child’s death would be ruled an accidental drowning at a lavish celebration, the trust would liquidate into Evelyn’s discretionary account, and her family’s debt would be erased before the markets opened on Monday."
"She’s an animal," Daniel whispered, his voice trembling with an icy, lethal resolve.
"She’s a cornered predator," Vance corrected. "And she isn't acting alone. We pulled the cell phone tower pings from Crestview Drive over the past forty-eight hours. Evelyn received eleven encrypted calls from an unregistered burner phone located near the Manhattan financial district. The IP address routed directly through the law offices of Croft & Croft."
Julian Croft. The family lawyer who had managed the Vale estate for three generations. The man Daniel had trusted to draft his will, to organize his tax structures, to protect his family.
"Julian was at the party tonight," Daniel realized, his heart hammering against his ribs. "He was standing by the gazebo. When Clara fell into the water, he was the one who shouted that the fountain was shallow and that she was just playing! He delayed the rescue!"
"He created the diversion," Vance said, checking his watch. "My team in Westchester just radioed in. Evelyn’s Range Rover was intercepted on the ramp leading to Hangar 4. But Daniel... she wasn't in the car."
Daniel’s blood turned to ice. "What do you mean she wasn't in the car?"
"The driver was a hired courier. She used her phone as a decoy to lead our squad cars upstate. Evelyn is still in the city. And according to the surveillance footage we just pulled from the Midtown parking garage, she met Julian Croft in a black Audi fifteen minutes ago."
Vance stepped closer to Daniel, his eyes dark with impending violence. "They know the child survived the water, Daniel. The hospital radio frequencies aren't encrypted. They know Clara is in the pediatric ICU. And if Clara speaks to our forensic interviewers tomorrow morning, both of them are going to federal prison for attempted murder."
"She’s coming here," Daniel breathed, looking toward the heavy security doors that separated the ICU from the public corridors.

"She’s already here," Vance said, pulling his service Glock from beneath his coat and racking the slide with a clean, sharp click.
