Chapter 7 - Shattered Porcelain

Room 412 of the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit was quiet save for the rhythmic, rhythmic *beep... beep... beep* of the cardiac monitor and the soft hiss of the oxygen cannula delivering heated air into Clara’s nostrils. The little girl looked impossibly small in the center of the oversized hospital bed, her pale face framed by tangled golden hair, her tiny chest rising and falling beneath the thin flannel blanket.

The door to the room creaked open, moving silently on oiled hinges.

A figure in a white medical coat stepped into the dim room, illuminated only by the green glow of the vital signs display. Evelyn pulled the surgical mask up over her nose and mouth, her sea-glass eyes gleaming with cold, pitiless intent. She moved toward the bedside table, her rubber-soled shoes making no sound against the floor.

She reached into her coat pocket, withdrawing the pre-filled syringe of potassium chloride. Her eyes flicked toward the plastic IV port dangling from the line running into Clara’s small hand.

"Such a pity, darling," Evelyn whispered under her breath, her voice barely a breath of venom in the dark. "You really should have learned to hold your breath longer."

She raised the syringe, her thumb resting on the plunger, aligning the needle with the rubber injection port.

"Touch that line, Evelyn, and I will rip your throat out with my bare hands."

Evelyn froze.

From the shadowed alcove beside the bathroom, Daniel stepped into the light. His eyes were completely bloodshot, his face pale as marble, his large frame blocking the only exit from the room. Behind him stepped Detective Vance, his weapon drawn and leveled directly at Evelyn’s forehead.

"Drop the syringe, Mrs. Vale," Vance commanded, his voice dead and dangerous. "Hands where I can see them. Right now."

Evelyn didn't drop the syringe. Instead, she slowly lowered her hands, a terrifying, mocking smile spreading beneath her surgical mask. She pulled the mask down with her free hand, revealing her perfectly painted lips.

"Daniel," she cooed, her tone dripping with manufactured amusement. "You always were so dramatic. Do you really think this backwater detective can make anything stick? Julian is already drafting the injunction. You have zero physical proof of anything."

"We have the audio from the Blue Room, Evelyn," Daniel said, his voice terrifyingly calm, vibrating with a rage so profound it seemed to drop the temperature in the room by twenty degrees. "We have the recordings of my daughter screaming in the dark while you drank wine downstairs."

For the first time, a flicker of panic darted across Evelyn’s flawless face. Her jaw tightened. "That’s illegal surveillance. Inadmissible in any court in New York."

"Maybe in a civil court," Vance said, taking a slow step forward. "Not in a murder trial. And certainly not when we pulled Julian Croft out of your black Audi in the parking garage three minutes ago. He broke like a cheap watch, Evelyn. He handed over your encrypted text messages, the offshore wire transfers, and the forged trust codicil."

Evelyn’s sea-glass eyes widened in genuine terror. "Julian? That cowardly little worm..."

"Daddy?"

The tiny, fragile voice broke through the tension like glass shattering on stone.

Daniel’s heart stopped. He looked toward the bed. Clara’s eyes were open, fluttering against the dim green light. She turned her head toward Daniel, her small face scrunching in confusion and terror.

Then she saw Evelyn.

A high-pitched, primal shriek tore from Clara’s throat—a sound of sheer, unadulterated horror that shook Daniel to the core of his soul. The little girl frantically kicked her legs, tangling herself in the bedsheets, pressing her back against the headboard as if trying to melt into the wall.

"No! No! Not the blue room!" Clara screamed, hyperventilating as the cardiac monitor spiked violently from 80 to 140 beats per minute. "Daddy! Don't let her take me! Don't put me in the dark!"

"Clara, baby, no!" Daniel rushed forward, completely disregarding Evelyn, completely disregarding the world.

He threw himself across the bed, wrapping his massive arms around his daughter’s shaking frame, shielding her with his entire body. Clara buried her face into his soaked tuxedo, her tiny hands clutching his lapels with desperate, bruising force.

"I’ve got you," Daniel sobbed, tears finally pouring down his cheeks as he held his child against his heart. "I’ve got you, Clara. Nobody is ever going to hurt you again. Daddy is right here. I’m here."

Taking advantage of the distraction, Evelyn lunged toward the heavy syringe, aiming the needle directly at Daniel’s neck.

*BANG.*

A single shot echoed through the confined room, deafening in its finality. Evelyn gasped, the syringe flying from her fingers as Vance’s tackle drove her violently to the floor, pinning her arms behind her back with the cold steel of handcuffs.
