Chapter 5 - The Architect of Shadows

The underground parking garage beneath St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital smelled of damp concrete and exhaust fumes. In the far corner, tucked beneath the shadow of a massive ventilation duct, a sleek black Audi sat with its engine idling silently.
Inside, Evelyn Vale stared into the illuminated vanity mirror of the passenger visor, applying a fresh coat of crimson lipstick with hands that didn't waver by a millimeter. Beside her in the driver’s seat sat Julian Croft, his tailored charcoal suit rumpled, sweat glistening on his receding hairline.
"You’re insane, Evelyn," Croft hissed, his fingers drumming frantically on the leather-wrapped steering wheel. "The police have the house surrounded! They seized the security servers! The courier was busted at Westchester ten minutes ago! Vance is SVU—he’s a bulldog, he doesn't let go!"
"Shut up, Julian," Evelyn said softly, snapping the lipstick case shut with a crisp *click*. She turned her sea-glass eyes toward him, cold and vacant as an arctic sea. "The servers were wiped remotely by your IT contact at eight-fifty. The only thing they have is circumstantial footage of a dark terrace."
"They have the maid!" Croft whispered frantically, his voice cracking with panic. "Hannah was there! She saw you push the girl!"
"Hannah is an illiterate kitchen girl whose word against mine in front of a grand jury is worth less than the paper her indictment for jewelry theft will be printed on," Evelyn replied, her voice dripping with aristocratic contempt. "The only person whose testimony can ruin us is Clara. If that little brat tells them about the Blue Room, the medical examiners will match her statements to the bone scans. We will lose everything. The firm, the estate, our freedom."
"She’s in the pediatric ICU, Evelyn! Surrounded by cops!"
"She’s in Room 412," Evelyn said, pulling a stolen electronic keycard from her designer leather clutch. "And Vance doesn't know the hospital layout like I do. I served on the St. Jude’s Charity Board for two years. The freight elevators in the west basement bypass the main security checkpoint and open directly into the pediatric surgical prep room."
"What are you planning to do?" Croft’s voice dropped into a horrified whisper. "Evelyn... secondary drowning was one thing. A staged accident. But inside a hospital? That’s execution!"
"Secondary drowning causes cardiac arrest due to pulmonary edema, Julian," Evelyn said, her tone as chillingly clinical as a textbook. "All it takes is ten milliliters of potassium chloride slipped into her IV port. The monitors will show a fatal arrhythmia brought on by hypothermic shock. Tragic. Expected. Daniel will be too broken to contest the trust, and you will file the probate petition by noon on Tuesday."
She reached into her coat pocket and produced a small, rubber-stoppered glass vial and a fine-gauge syringe.
"Stay in the car," Evelyn commanded, sliding open the passenger door. "Keep the engine running. If I’m not back in seven minutes, drive to the Canadian border and don't stop."

She stepped out into the damp, shadowy cavern of the parking garage, slipping a white lab coat over her dark silk trousers. Her heels clicked rhythmically against the oil-stained concrete, echoing like the ticking of a grandfather clock in an empty mansion.
