Chapter 2 - The Ghost of Daniel Cross

Three years had passed since the night Daniel Cross was erased from the world, but Maya still smelled the sulfur every time she closed her eyes.

Daniel was Maya’s older brother and Clara’s husband—a brilliant senior forensic auditor for the Department of Justice who possessed a dangerous, unyielding obsession with the truth. To the public, Daniel died in a tragic, late-night industrial fire at the Port of Saint Jude. The official coroner’s report, signed by a coroner who retired to the Bahamas two months later, claimed it was an accidental fuel-line explosion inside an abandoned warehouse. Daniel’s body was burned beyond visual recognition, identified only through dental records.

Maya had never believed it for a fraction of a second.

Back then, Maya had been a lead investigator with the state tactical crimes unit. When she started pulling warehouse surveillance tapes, the footage from three separate port cameras vanished from the precinct servers. When she demanded an independent autopsy on Daniel's remains, Internal Affairs suspended her badge, citing "emotional instability and erratic conduct." Within six months, her career was dismantled, her gun taken, and her brother buried beneath a cold granite headstone that Clara rarely had the strength to visit.

Now, crouching on the terrace of the Blackwood Estate while three hundred elite guests watched in stunned horror, Daniel’s ghost stood between them all like a wall of ice.

"Get up, Clara," Maya commanded in a low, steely murmur, her tactical training overriding the chaos around them. "Pick Leo up right now."

Clara was trembling violently, her knuckles white as she scooped the five-year-old into her arms. Leo buried his chocolate-stained face into the hollow of his mother’s neck, his small frame shuddering with silent sobs. The emerald satin of Maya’s gown was torn at the shoulder, soaked in champagne and red frosting, but she stood like an iron sentinel, shielding the mother and child.

Around the perimeter of the terrace, the atmosphere shifted instantly from shocked embarrassment to calculated menace.

Four private security guards in tailored dark suits—men with the unmistakable posture of ex-mercenaries—were already moving through the crowd. They weren't checking on Vance. They were fanning out, cutting off the exits leading to the valet drive and the estate's south gardens. Their hands hovered conspicuously beneath their left lapels.

In the wreckage of the buffet table, Vance pushed off the broken mahogany. Blood dripped from a long gash across his cheekbone where a crystal flute had sliced the flesh, mixing with the melted caramel and crushed ice coating his chest. But he wasn't looking at Maya with the fury of an insulted oligarch anymore.

He was staring directly at Leo’s chest.

"Secure the gates," Vance rasped, his voice vibrating with a terrifying urgency. He stumbled forward, ignoring the pain in his ribs, pointing a trembling, manicured finger at Clara. "Do not let that child leave the premises! Lock down the perimeter! Now!"

"Move," Maya muttered to Clara, gripping the woman's shoulder and forcing her backward toward the French doors leading to the interior gallery.

"Maya, we can't get to my car," Clara whispered, hyperventilating, tears carving tracks through her powder foundation. "They parked it in the VIP valet bay. His men control the gates."

"We aren't going to your car," Maya said, her eyes tracking the lead guard approaching from the right at a brisk, tactical walk. "Daniel didn't die for you to freeze now, Clara. Look at me. Breathe. We move on my count."

Behind them, Vance was screaming at the house manager to cut the cellular jamming array so his private tactical team could respond. That single slip of Vance’s tongue told Maya everything: Vance had already been jamming the estate’s telecommunications. This party wasn't just an anniversary gala for Vance’s shipping conglomerate.

It was an ambush. And Clara and Leo had walked straight into the lion's mouth.
