Chapter 7 - The Cost of Blood

Emergency red halogen floodlights flared to life along the concrete walls, casting long, bloody shadows across the metal filing cabinets.

At the far end of the archive vault, twenty yards away, stood Richard Vance.

He had changed out of his ruined tuxedo into a pristine navy cashmere coat. A sterile white bandage was taped across his sliced cheekbone, and his silver hair was combed back with razor-sharp precision. Flanking him were six men in black tactical uniforms carrying submachine guns, their laser sights painting dancing red dots across the concrete walls.

Beside Vance stood an older man with silvering temples and a gold badge pinned to his lapel: Chief Marshal Arthur Bradley—Daniel’s former mentor.

Clara gasped, pulling Leo behind her back, her face draining of all color. "Bradley... you were at our wedding. You held Leo when he was born!"

Marshal Bradley didn't look at Clara. He stared at the floor, his jaw set in a mask of guilty resignation. "You shouldn't have brought him back here, Clara. Daniel was supposed to take the buyout. I told him three years ago: Vance is too big to fall. When Daniel refused to walk away, he signed his own death warrant. Don't make me add Leo's name to that paper."

"You sold Daniel out," Maya whispered, stepping in front of Clara and the child, her Glock held low at her side, her thumb resting on the safety switch. "You gave Vance the entry codes to the port warehouse."

"Vance owns the pension funds of every officer in this state, Maya!" Bradley shouted, his voice cracking with defensive rage. "He owns the debt on the hospitals, the schools, the judicial system! Daniel was going to trigger financial armageddon to satisfy his own moral vanity!"

"He was exposing a murderer!" Maya roared.

On the desk behind her, the terminal screen flashed rhythmically:

`LEDGER DECRYPTION: 78%... 84%... 91%...`

Vance glanced at the glowing terminal, his eyes narrowing to slits. All the civilized polish dropped from his face, revealing the ravenous monster beneath.

"Kill the woman," Vance ordered flatly, pointing at Maya. "Subdue Clara. Secure the child. If the terminal completes the transmission, burn this entire archive to the ground and write it off as an electrical fire. Bradley, do it now, or your daughter’s offshore accounts in the Caymans become front-page news by breakfast."

Bradley’s hands trembled as he slowly drew his service weapon.

"Bradley, look at this boy!" Clara screamed, her voice tearing through the cavernous archive. "He has Daniel’s eyes! You promised Daniel you would protect him!"

Bradley hesitated, his gun hand wavering between Maya and the floor.

"Shoot her, you weak old bastard!" Vance snarled, reaching inside his coat and drawing a pearl-handled .357 Magnum.

Maya didn't wait for Bradley's conscience to resolve its war.

She dove sideways behind a heavy steel filing cabinet just as the first mercenary opened fire. A hail of 9mm rounds chewed through the sheet metal, spewing shredding paper documents into the air like a blizzard of dead secrets.

Maya returned fire through the gap between two metal shelves, dropping the mercenary on the left with two double-taps to the chest.

"Clara, under the desk! Keep Leo flat!" Maya screamed over the deafening roar of gunfire inside the enclosed concrete vault.

A ricocheting bullet struck Maya’s right thigh. A hot iron spike of pain shot up her spine, nearly dropping her to one knee. Warm blood instantly soaked through her black cargo pants. She gritted her teeth, ignoring the agony, and fired again, pinning the two remaining contractors behind a concrete pillar.

On the desk, the computer emitted a high-pitched, triumphant electronic tone:

`LEDGER DECRYPTION: 100% COMPLETE.`

`PREPARING GLOBAL SATELLITE DISPERSAL SEQUENCE.`

`FINAL OVERRIDE AUTHORIZATION PENDING: PHYSICAL CONFIRMATION KEY REQUIRED.`

A large red flashing button appeared on the terminal screen: `BROADCAST`.

All Vance needed to do was destroy the terminal before someone pressed that key.

Vance stepped forward, ignoring the gunfire, raising his .357 directly at the glass monitor of Terminal 09.
