Chapter 9 - The Choice

The screen turned a blinding, absolute emerald green.

`COMMENCING SECURE DISPERSAL TO 42 SYNDICATED ENDPOINTS.`

`DATA TRANSMISSION: 100% SUCCESSFUL.`

`ALL DESTINATIONS CONFIRMED RECEIPT.`

`ARCHIVE LOCKED BY SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR: CROSS, DANIEL [DECEASED].`

A low, subterranean hum vibrated through the floor as the air-gapped servers finished dumping twelve terabytes of encrypted bank records, audio intercepts, murder contracts, and political ledgers onto the global internet.

Within four seconds, across thirteen time zones, the digital ghost of Daniel Cross detonated the Vance empire.

In New York, Washington, London, and Tokyo, newsroom terminals began flashing red with incoming high-priority leaks. Automated federal wiretaps triggered emergency arrest warrants across four state capitals. The Department of Justice’s primary server farm lit up with hundreds of verified internal shipping logs documenting maritime arms shipments, state bribery payoffs, and offshore money-laundering pipelines.

On the floor of the archive, Richard Vance lay in a pool of his own sweat and blood, his shattered leg throbbing, staring up at the green glow of the terminal screen.

His phone began to vibrate violently on the floor beside him. Then his secondary phone. Then his secure satellite pager.

Dozens of calls. The governor. His chief financial officer. The director of the federal maritime bureau. His personal Swiss wealth manager.

Nobody was calling to save him. They were calling because the fire was spreading, and they were all burning with him.

"You... you killed us all," Vance whispered, his voice trembling, all the color drained from his aristocratic face. "Do you have any idea what you've done? The markets... the entire state banking system... it's all going to collapse..."

"The system won't collapse," Maya said, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper as she leaned over him, her grey eyes burning into his soul. "Just the parasites feeding on it."

Behind them, the archive doors were breached again—not by mercenaries, but by the flashing blue-and-red strobes of thirty metropolitan tactical police cruisers and federal FBI strike teams swarming the subterranean courthouse tunnels.

"Federal agents! Weapons on the ground! Do not move!"

Maya slowly raised her hands, stepping away from Vance's broken body.

Clara stood beside Terminal 09, her arms wrapped tightly around Leo, who was watching the flashing police lights reflect across the concrete walls.

Marshal Bradley, sitting against the desk with blood drying on his forehead, looked up at the swarming federal tactical units. Slowly, he unclipped his gold marshal’s badge and let it drop onto the floor, kicking it toward the incoming agents.

"Take Vance into custody," Bradley croaked to the lead FBI agent. "He's the one you've been looking for for ten years. And I'm your primary state witness."

The agents swarmed the room, guns drawn, but when they saw the documents streaming across the main terminal display, the lead tactical commander slowly lowered his rifle.

He looked at Maya, then at the child with the chocolate stains still faintly visible on his collar, and finally at the whimpering billionaire on the floor.

"Paramedics!" the commander barked into his radio. "We need two trauma kits and three transport units to Archive B-4 immediately. And notify the United States Attorney General... the Daniel Cross file is open."
