Chapter 3 - The Web of Scars

The seconds following Julian’s entrance into the nursery stretched into eternity. The room was heavy with the smell of scorched flesh, scalding rosemary broth, and the sickening coppery tang of fresh blood.
Julian’s overcoat fell to the floor. His eyes darted between the weeping, blistered infant in Martha's trembling arms and Victoria, who had dropped to her knees, sobbing with theatrical hysteria.
"Julian! Call security!" Victoria shrieked, clutching her own silk-clad shoulders, shivering as if in absolute shock. "She snapped! Martha completely lost her mind! I heard Lily crying from the hall and came in... and she was pouring boiling soup into the crib! Look at her! She attacked me when I tried to pull the pot away!"
Martha leaned against the white oak railing, her breathing shallow, rattled, and agonizing. Her vision was dimming around the edges, third-degree burns eating through the nerve endings of her back. The pain was beyond human endurance, yet she tightened her arm around Lily’s trembling torso.
"You... lying... viper," Martha wheezed, her swollen, bloody lip making the words thick. "Julian... she... she did this. She wanted to scald the baby's face... look at Lily's arm..."
"Julian, look at my face! Look at my hands!" Victoria cried, throwing herself toward him, grabbing his tailored slacks. Her hands were indeed reddened from handling the heavy pot without heat mitts, and a few drops of grease had speckled her ivory silk. "She struck me! She's been resentful ever since we got married! She thinks she runs this house! She was jealous, Julian! She screamed that if Lily couldn't have Claire, no one could have her!"
Julian stood frozen, his mind short-circuiting under a barrage of cognitive dissonance. Martha Vance was practically a mother to him; she had tended to his boyhood fevers. Yet Victoria was his wife—a woman who had spent months playing the role of the devoted, selfless partner.
"Stop it! Both of you, shut up!" Julian roared, the boardroom commander roaring to life through his panic.
He dropped down beside Martha. His eyes caught the horrific sight of his daughter’s arm—the delicate skin peeling back in angry, translucent blisters, fluid weeping from the trauma. A visceral, paternal rage tore through his chest.
"Lily..." Julian’s voice cracked. He reached to touch the baby, but the moment Lily saw a hand approaching, she flinched violently, burying her blistered face into Martha's apron and letting out a sharp, breathless whimper of sheer terror.
The child rejected him. In her agony, she sought refuge only in the scorched, bleeding woman holding her.
"Julian, don't let her touch the child any longer!" Victoria pleaded from behind him, crawling closer, her eyes wet with crocodile tears. "She's insane! She belongs in a psychiatric ward! Call the private clinic, have them sedate her before she hurts Lily again!"
Martha raised her head, looking Julian directly in the eyes. Her gaze, despite the agonizing pain threatening to drag her into unconsciousness, was clear, unyielding, and utterly devoid of fear.
"Julian," Martha whispered, the blood from her split lip dripping onto her collar. "I held your hand when your mother died. I held Claire when she breathed her last. I swore to God I would protect your blood. Do you really believe... that I could burn this baby?"
Julian looked into the old nanny’s eyes, and a cold dread seized his spine. The room felt suddenly devoid of oxygen.
"Paramedics!" Julian shouted at the top of his lungs, his voice echoing through the corridors of the mansion. "DAVIS! Call the private ambulance! NOW! And get Dr. Bradley up here immediately!"
Footsteps thundered from the lower floors as the butler and security guards answered the master’s panic.
Victoria watched Julian’s eyes. She saw the microscopic shift—the seed of doubt taking root. Julian had not immediately ordered Martha’s arrest. He had not accepted the narrative as blindly as she had anticipated.
A dark, desperate panic flared in Victoria's chest. She had anticipated that Julian’s grief-induced fragility would make him pliable; she had calculated that a man horrified by the sight of a burned child would instantly cast out the low-born nanny. But Martha’s iron defiance had created an obstacle.

*I have to finish this,* Victoria thought, her fingernails pressing deep into her palms until they threatened to pierce the flesh. *If Martha talks... if Julian investigates... everything ends today.*
