Chapter 6 - The Eye in the Crown Molding

Two miles away, inside an unmarked black SUV parked along the forested shoulder of Route 9W, a pair of dark, bloodshot eyes stared intently at a high-resolution laptop display.
The man behind the wheel was Marcus Vance. He was thirty-two years old, a former United States Marine Corps signals intelligence specialist, and currently the head of technical security for Sterling Capital.
He was also Martha Vance’s only son.
Marcus had not trusted Victoria Montgomery from the second she crossed the threshold of the Sterling estate. While Julian had been blinded by mourning, Marcus had operated with the cold, cynical intuition of an intelligence operative. He had spent years in Kandahar detecting ambushes before they happened; he recognized the subtle predatory posturing of a woman moving in for a kill.
Three months ago, after Martha had called him in tears, whispering about subtle threats Victoria had made regarding Lily’s nursery, Marcus had bypassed the estate's primary commercial security network.
Using military-grade micro-optics and encrypted short-wave transmission protocols, Marcus had secretly installed a self-contained, pinhole fiber-optic camera directly into the hand-carved mahogany crown molding of Lily’s nursery. It did not connect to the estate’s Wi-Fi; it did not route through Julian’s central home automation servers. It transmitted an encrypted, continuous 4K audio-video feed directly to an isolated, military-grade drive mounted in Marcus’s private vehicle and an off-site cloud vault in Iceland.
When the live alert had pinged on his tactical watch fifteen minutes earlier—triggered by sound pressure levels exceeding eighty decibels—Marcus had pulled over immediately.
Now, sitting in the darkness of the SUV, his hands shook violently on the steering wheel.
On the screen before him, the entire nightmare was playing out in crystalline, unstabilized detail. He saw Victoria entering with the smoking Dutch oven. He heard her icy, psychopathic whisper: *"Now he will look at you and see damage."* He watched the scalding liquid pour over his mother's infant charge. He saw his mother throw her body over the crib. He watched Victoria strike his mother, split her lip, and deliberately dump the boiling soup over his mother’s back.
"No... Mom... no, no, no..." Marcus whispered, his voice cracking, tears streaming down his hardened, sun-bronzed cheeks.
A feral, suffocating fury erupted inside him. His mother had raised him alone on a housekeeper’s wage; she had scrubbed floors so he could go to college. She was the gentlest soul on earth, and on that screen, her skin was literally peeling beneath the boiling liquid while a sociopath in an ivory robe looked on with a satisfied sneer.
Marcus slammed the laptop shut, engaged the ignition of the heavy V8 engine, and threw the SUV into drive. The tires screamed against the damp asphalt, leaving scorched rubber as he accelerated toward the Sterling estate at ninety miles per hour.
He didn't just have an alert. He had the complete, unedited, forensic-grade digital record of an attempted murder.
As he drove, his tactical headset buzzed. It was the dispatch frequency of the local sheriff’s office and the county trauma center.
*"All units, be advised: Private medical response en route to Sterling Manor on Overlook Drive. Report of a severe pediatric thermal burn incident and an assault on an elderly domestic staff member. Stand by for domestic disturbance protocol."*
Marcus gritted his teeth until his jaw throbbed, pressing his thumb against the steering wheel's audio control.

"Dispatch, this is Marcus Vance, Sterling Private Security ID 409," he said, his voice terrifyingly calm, carved from ice and iron. "I am en route to that location. Inform your deputies not to let the mistress of the house leave the premises under any circumstances. I repeat: detain Victoria Sterling immediately. I have active, verified evidence of attempted homicide."
