Chapter 7 - Ash and Agony

The trauma unit at Westchester Medical Center smelled of iodine, industrial disinfectant, and burning skin.
Julian Sterling sat on a hard plastic chair in the sterile corridor outside the pediatric burn unit, his head buried in his trembling hands. His tailored charcoal overcoat was discarded on the floor, stained with grease, blood, and amniotic-like serum from his daughter’s blisters.
Behind the double glass doors, a team of pediatric surgeons was debriding the skin on Lily’s arm. Even through the soundproof glass, Julian could hear the muffled, razor-sharp shrieks of his one-year-old child. Every shriek felt like a sledgehammer shattering his ribs.
Further down the hall, in the critical trauma bay, Martha Vance was fighting for her life. The boiling soup had seeped through her clothing, cooking the subdermal tissue across forty percent of her upper back, neck, and shoulder blades. The doctors had already informed Julian that severe shock had set in; her blood pressure was plummeting, and there was a grave risk of systemic sepsis.
"Mr. Sterling?"
Julian looked up. His eyes were bloodshot, his jaw stubbled with exhaustion. Standing before him was Dr. Aris Thorne, the chief of trauma surgery.
"How is she? How is my daughter?" Julian gasped, scrambling to his feet.
"Lily has sustained extensive second-degree burns across her left hand, forearm, and upper chest," Dr. Thorne said solemnly. "She is in immense pain, but we have stabilized her. We managed to debride the dead tissue before infection could take hold. If the burn had reached her neck or face... Julian, she could have choked on her own airway swelling. Whoever shielded that child saved her life. Literally."
Julian felt the room tilt. *Martha.*
"And Martha?" Julian’s voice barely carried over the hum of the fluorescent lights.
"Her condition is critical," Dr. Thorne replied, his expression darkening. "The liquid was near boiling point, and the wool garment she wore acted as an insulator, holding the heat against her dermis for several minutes. She has deep third-degree burns extending to the muscle fascia. We are transferring her to the intensive burn ICU. The next forty-eight hours are crucial."
Julian staggered backward, hitting the sterile wall.
Images flashed through his mind: Martha, bleeding from her mouth, her back smoking, whispering: *Julian, do you really believe that I could burn this baby?*
And then he remembered Victoria.
Victoria had insisted on remaining at the estate to "settle the household" and "cooperate with the initial police report." She had played the delicate, traumatized victim, begging him to stay with Lily while she handled the authorities. Julian had been so blinded by panic that he had simply nodded, leaving his estate in her hands.
A cold, sickening intuition began to creep through Julian’s chest.
Why had Victoria been carrying a massive pot of boiling soup to the third floor herself? The estate had a staff of eight. There was a dumbwaiter system designed specifically to transport food to the upper levels. Why was the mistress of the manor, who had never so much as boiled an egg in her life, transporting a twenty-pound cast-iron pot of boiling liquid directly into a baby's nursery?
Before Julian could process the thought, heavy combat boots echoed down the hospital corridor.
Marcus Vance marched toward him. His black tactical uniform was soaked with rain; his eyes were blazing with a homicidal fire that made the hospital security guards instinctively reach for their belts.
"Julian!" Marcus roared.
Julian turned. "Marcus... thank God you're here. Your mother—"
Marcus didn't let him finish. In a split second, Marcus closed the distance, grabbed Julian by the lapels of his ruined silk shirt, and slammed the billionaire against the hospital wall with concussive force.
"You blind, pathetic coward!" Marcus hissed, his face inches from Julian’s, veins bulging along his neck. "You brought a venomous snake into your house! You let her sleep in Claire’s bed, and now look what she did to my mother! Look what she did to your daughter!"
"Marcus, stop!" Julian choked out, grasping Marcus’s wrists. "Victoria said Martha snapped—"
"Victoria lied!" Marcus bellowed, releasing Julian so violently that the hedge fund titan stumbled to his knees.
Marcus unclipped a ruggedized military tablet from his tactical belt and shoved the glowing screen directly into Julian’s face.

"Look at it!" Marcus shouted, tears of pure rage spilling down his face. "Look at what your precious wife did while you were playing master of the universe!"
