Chapter 10 - The Queen of Moretti

The private airstrip in South Jersey was a desolate strip of cracked tarmac flanked by the black, stagnant marshes of the Delaware Bay.

A Gulfstream IV sat idling on the runway, its twin jet engines whining in the dark as rain lashed the fuselage.

Dante Vanezzy stood beneath an umbrella held by his last remaining lieutenant, checking his gold Rolex with mounting irritation. A leather duffel bag packed with offshore bearer bonds and false passports sat at his feet.

"Where the hell are they?" Dante snarled, checking his encrypted phone. "The strike team should have been back an hour ago!"

"They're not coming, Dante."

The voice emerged from the darkness beyond the perimeter hangars.

Dante spun around, his hand instinctively reaching into his white tuxedo jacket.

Out of the pouring rain walked Luca Moretti.

He wore no coat. His black shirt was rolled to the elbows, his hands bare. But behind him, emerging from the shadows like an army of wraiths, stood thirty heavily armed Moretti soldiers—men who had reclaimed the city while Dante was waiting for a prize that was never delivered.

And beside Luca walked me.

I wore a heavy black wool trench coat over my ruined emerald dress. My bare, bandaged feet were shoved into a pair of Luca’s combat boots, laced tight. Leo was securely fastened against my chest in a tactical sling beneath the coat, warm, dry, and sound asleep, entirely oblivious to the execution about to take place.

In my right hand, held down at my side, was the Glock.

Dante stared at us, his face draining of all color until he looked like a walking corpse.

"You..." Dante stammered, stepping back toward the stairs of the jet. "You killed my team."

"I killed your team," Luca said smoothly, stopping twenty paces away. "I killed Sal. I seized your cargo at the docks. And the District Attorney—whom I own—just signed twelve federal warrants for your arrest on treason, racketeering, and international narcotics trafficking."

"You can't touch me, Moretti!" Dante shrieked, his voice cracking with hysteria. He ripped a snub-nosed revolver from his waistband, pointing it erratically between Luca and me. "I am a Vanezzy! The child is my blood! Half of everything you own belongs to me!"

"Nothing belongs to you, Dante," I spoke up, my voice cutting through the roar of the jet engines with razor-sharp clarity.

I stepped forward, moving past Luca’s shoulder.

Luca didn't stop me. He watched me with pride burning in his eyes, his hand resting casually on the hilt of his sidearm, ready to tear the world apart if Dante even flinched toward me.

I reached beneath my coat, pulling the silver Falcone pendant from my collarbone. It caught the harsh halogen floodlights of the runway, gleaming like a blade.

"My mother was Clara Falcone," I said, my voice echoing across the tarmac. "The rightful heir to the Palermo holdings you stole thirty years ago. Under Sicilian law, under syndicate law, and under the law of this city... you are a thief standing on borrowed ground."

Dante stared at the pendant, his eyes bulging with terror. "You're a waitress! A nobody!"

"She is my wife," Luca roared, the sound cutting off Dante’s words like an axe. "She is the head of the Moretti family. And you are trespassing on her runway."

Dante’s hand trembled violently. His eyes darted to the jet, then back to my chest, where Leo slept peacefully beneath the wool coat.

A final, desperate madness seized Dante’s mind.

He raised his revolver, cocking the hammer, aiming directly at my forehead. "If I don't get the boy, nobody—"

He never finished the sentence.

I raised the Glock with both hands, steady, cold, and unwavering.

*BANG.*

The gunshot cracked through the rainy night.

A neat, dark hole appeared directly between Dante Vanezzy’s eyes.

His pupils dilated. The revolver slipped from his lifeless fingers, clattering against the tarmac. For a second, he swayed in the howling wind, looking like a discarded puppet, before collapsing backward onto the concrete runway, his blood washing away into the South Jersey marshland.

His last remaining lieutenant immediately dropped to his knees, throwing his weapon aside, pressing his face into the wet asphalt in total surrender.

I lowered the gun.

My breath plumed in the cold autumn air, white and steady. The trembling was gone. The waitress who worried about forty-three dollars in checking had died somewhere on the third floor of the Pine Street mansion.

The woman standing on this runway had killed to protect her family.

Luca stepped up behind me.

He didn't look at Dante’s corpse. He wrapped his arms around me from behind, his hands resting gently over Leo’s back, shielding both of us from the wind. He pressed his lips against the crown of my head, breathing in the scent of rain and gunpowder that clung to my hair.

"Are you alright, little bird?" Luca whispered against my temple.

I looked down at Leo. The infant stirred slightly, letting out a soft sigh, his tiny hand reaching up to touch the silver pendant resting against the black wool of my coat.

He was safe. We were safe.

I leaned back against Luca’s chest, feeling the steady, unstoppable power of the man who ruled this city, knowing that he belonged to me just as much as I belonged to him.

"I'm not a little bird anymore, Luca," I murmured, turning my head to meet his burning, devoted gaze.

May you like

A slow, devastating smile touched Luca’s lips as he raised my hand, pressing his mouth against the four-carat emerald ring on my finger.

"No, my love," Luca whispered, his voice sealing our future in stone. "You are the Queen."
