Chapter 8 - When the Glass Shatters

Luca had been gone for two hours.

It was 2:30 a.m. The rain had intensified into a howling gale that battered the heavy limestone walls of the estate.

I hadn't left Leo’s side. We were in the master suite, the baby resting against my chest on the bed, his fever finally broken, his skin warm and pink again. Dr. Bennett had set up a cardiac monitor on the nightstand, its steady, rhythmic *beep... beep... beep* the only sound in the cavernous room.

Marco was pacing outside the suite’s heavy doors, his submachine gun slung across his chest. Four other armed guards patrolled the hallway. Downstairs, six more watched the perimeter monitors.

The house was an iron bunker.

Or so we thought.

Suddenly, the rhythmic *beep* of the monitor died.

The overhead lights flickered once, twice, and then snapped off entirely.

The room plunged into absolute, pitch-black darkness.

A heartbeat later, the low, mechanical hum of the estate’s backup generators failed to kick on. The silent emergency crimson lights didn't illuminate. The entire electrical grid had been cut at the main trunk line outside the property walls.

"Marco!" I called out, my heart leaping into my throat.

"Stay inside, signora!" Marco’s voice boomed through the mahogany door. "Keep low! They cut the main power!"

*Thud.*

It wasn't a gunshot. It was the sharp, muffled *phut* of a suppressed high-caliber rifle firing through the reinforced glass of the corridor windows.

Then came the scream.

A wet, choking sound ripped through the dark hallway, followed by the heavy collapse of a body against the floorboards.

"Breach! South stairwell!" a guard shouted, instantly cut off by a brutal burst of automatic fire.

*Pop-pop-pop-pop!*

Gunfire erupted directly outside the bedroom door. Sparks flashed through the crack beneath the frame, illuminating the dark room in violent, strobing flashes of light.

"Marco!" I screamed, rolling off the bed, clutching Leo tightly in my left arm while scooping the cashmere blanket around him.

The heavy mahogany door shuddered under an immense impact.

"Avery!" Marco’s voice was strained, bubbling with blood. "The balcony! Get to the... fire escape behind the... ahhh!"

Another suppressed shot ended Marco’s words with horrifying finality.

The silence that followed was terrifying.

Footsteps. Heavy, tactical boots crunching over broken wood and spent brass casings right outside the door.

They weren't here to negotiate. Sal’s betrayal ran deeper than formula; they had coordinated an assault the moment Luca left the premises to hunt his cousin. Dante Vanezzy had used Sal as bait to draw the dragon from his lair, leaving the nest completely unprotected.

I was alone with an infant in a dark room with armed killers on the other side of a wooden door.

Panic clawed at my throat, threatening to paralyze me. But then Leo stirred against my chest, letting out a soft, frightened whimper, his tiny fingers tangling in my silver necklace.

*You don't look down,* Luca’s voice echoed in my mind. *You don't apologize.*

My eyes adjusted to the gloom. The faint moonlight filtering through the rain-streaked windows revealed the nightstand.

Luca had left his tuxedo jacket on the chair, but on the bottom shelf of the bedside table sat a secondary lockbox. It was open. Inside rested a sleek, matte-black Glock 19 and two spare magazines.

I didn't hesitate.

I reached into the box, gripping the cold polymer handle. I had never fired a real weapon in my life—only the ancient hunting rifle my uncle had shown me once at a cabin when I was twelve. But survival strips away hesitation.

I racked the slide, just as I had seen Luca do. The metallic *clack* was loud in the dark room.

The bedroom door handle jiggled.

Then, the lock splintered with a deafening *CRACK* as a tactical boot kicked the door inward.

A tall figure in dark body armor stepped through the threshold, a suppressed MPX submachine gun raised, the green laser of his sight sweeping across the unmade bed.

He saw the empty pillows. He lowered his aim toward the floor.

I was crouched behind the heavy oak armoire three feet away.

"Hey," I whispered.

The man snapped his weapon toward my voice.

I didn't wait. I raised the Glock with both hands, aiming directly at the center of the dark silhouette, and squeezed the trigger.

*BANG!*

The recoil slammed into my wrists like a baseball bat. The muzzle flash lit up the room in a blinding explosion of white light.

The bullet struck the man square in the throat, above his tactical vest.

He let out a gurgling, wet gasp, dropping his weapon, his hands flying to his neck as a torrent of dark blood sprayed across the wallpaper. He collapsed backward into the corridor, thrashing violently before going completely still.

My ears were ringing with a deafening, high-pitched whine. The smell of sulfur and blood was suffocating.

Leo began to scream, terrified by the concussive roar of the gunshot.

"I know, baby, I know," I gasped, tears blurring my vision as I scrambled to my feet.

I kicked the dead man’s submachine gun deeper into the bedroom, stepped over his body in the dark hallway, and looked down the corridor.

Three more bodies in tactical gear lay in the hallway, alongside two of Luca’s guards and Marco. Marco was propped against the baseboard, blood pooling beneath his chest, his eyes glassy.

"Signora..." Marco whispered weakly, raising a trembling, bloody hand toward the north stairwell. "Service elevator... basement... tunnel to the carriage house..."

"Marco, hold on," I pleaded, dropping to one knee beside him.

"Go!" Marco wheezed, blood flecking his lips. "More of them... outside. Take the tunnel... Luca is coming..."

His head lolled to the side. His hand fell limp against the floor.

Footsteps echoed from the grand staircase below—multiple men, shouting in Italian, their flashlights dancing across the high ceilings of the foyer.

I gripped the pistol in my right hand, held Leo fiercely against my chest with my left, and sprinted into the darkness of the north corridor.
