Chapter 16 - The Unraveling

The room smelled of spilled Cabernet Sauvignon and cold sweat.

Julian Vance was forced to his knees by two burly NCIS agents, his face pressed against the plush carpet of the hotel suite.

The digital forensic unit brought in by NCIS was already plugging drive-cloning cables into Julian's encrypted laptop.

"Data stream terminated, Captain," one of the agents announced, looking up at Claire.

"The transmission to Zurich was interrupted at 42 percent."

"None of the Atlantic Fleet submarine movement routes were successfully downloaded."

Claire nodded slowly, her posture rigid and imposing.

"Secure the terminal and tag all physical media in this room as evidence in a federal espionage investigation."

Margaret was weeping hysterically now, her manicured hands clutching her face as she cowered on the velvet sofa.

"Claire, please!" Margaret sobbed, looking up with red, swollen eyes.

"I didn't know he was stealing military files!"

"He told me he was helping me liquidate Thomas's old administrative accounts to clear my debt!"

"He said it was completely legal!"

"Ignorance of the law is not a defense against treason, Margaret," Claire replied, her voice smooth and merciless.

"You stole classified security files from my private residence three years ago while you were staying in my house."

"You gave those files to a dishonorably discharged operative."

"And you allowed him to frame me using my old Norfolk administrative routing credentials."

"No! I didn't frame you!" Margaret cried out, reaching toward Claire's coat.

"I don't know anything about routing credentials! I just wanted the money!"

"I wanted my life back! Everyone in Norfolk was laughing at me after that awful gala!"

"They stopped inviting me to the tea parties! They stopped calling me!"

Claire looked at the broken, miserable woman kneeling before her.

For seven years, Margaret had treated her like a lowly secretary, a nuisance, an inferior creature who existed only to serve her family's social image.

Now, stripped of her fake prestige, Margaret was nothing more than a petty, desperate criminal begging for mercy from the very woman she had spent years trying to destroy.

"You ruined your own life, Margaret," Claire said softly.

"The gala didn't expose you."

"It just showed the world who you really were."

An NCIS agent stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his tactical belt.

"Mrs. Margaret Ellison," the agent read from a laminated card.

"You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit espionage against the United States, unauthorized possession of classified materials, and computer fraud."

"You have the right to remain silent..."

"No! You can't arrest me!" Margaret screamed as the steel cuffs clicked tightly around her wrists.

"Call Owen! Call my lawyer! Owen!"

They dragged Margaret out of the suite, her heels dragging against the hallway carpet as her shrieks echoed down the quiet hotel corridor.

Sarah Vance stood near the doorway, watching her uncle Julian being led away in heavy chains.

She turned to Claire, her shoulders slumping with exhaustion.

"I'm sorry, Captain," Sarah said quietly.

"If I had known my family was involved in this—"

"It wasn't your fault, Sarah," Claire interrupted, placing a firm, supportive hand on her second-in-command's shoulder.

"You stood by the uniform tonight."

"That’s the only thing that matters."

Claire looked out the window of Suite 504 down at the street below, where police lights were flashing against the rain-slicked pavement.

The immediate threat was neutralized.

Her name would be cleared at the Pentagon.

But as she watched the flashing red and blue lights, she knew the political fallout from this night was only just beginning.
