Chapter 1 - The Call at 10:43 P.M.At 10:43 p.m., Daniel Carter’s phone rang.

He was two hours away from home, sitting in a sterile conference hotel where the lights were too bright and the air smelled faintly of burnt coffee. He almost ignored the call.
Then he saw the name.
Lily.
His seven-year-old daughter.
“Daddy…”
Her voice was barely audible.
Daniel sat upright.
“My back hurts. I can’t carry the baby anymore.”
Then he heard it.
Noah.
His six-month-old son was screaming somewhere behind her.
And underneath the crying came something that made Daniel’s blood run cold.
A woman laughing.
Light. Careless.
Impossible to reconcile with the message his wife, Claire, had sent that morning:
Fever. Migraine. I can barely get out of bed.
Daniel was already moving.
He left his bag in the hotel room, grabbed his keys, and ran.
The drive should have taken two hours.
He made it in eighty-three minutes.
When he unlocked the front door, the house was dark except for a thin blade of kitchen light beneath the doorway.
“Lily?”
Silence.
Then he saw her.
Barefoot. Shaking. Her favorite unicorn shirt stained with milk. Noah pressed against one hip, screaming while she tried desperately to wipe a puddle from the floor.
The moment she saw her father, her face collapsed.
“Daddy… I’m sorry. Mommy said not to call you.”
Daniel took Noah from her arms.
Then Lily winced as she bent down.
His eyes narrowed.
He pulled her collar aside.
Purple bruises wrapped around both tiny shoulders.
They looked like fingerprints from a child carrier.
Daniel felt something inside him break.
“Where is your mother?”
Lily swallowed.
“At Aunt Vanessa’s party. Grandma said I was old enough to help.”
His wife wasn't sick.

She had abandoned a seven-year-old girl with an infant.
And Daniel was about to discover that this was only the beginning.
