Chapter 7 - THE ADMIRAL WITHOUT A NAMEJonathan placed two photographs on the table.
Daniel Mercer.
Benjamin Cole.
Young officers.
Friends.
Different men.
Mercer stared.
Then Jonathan told him:
“Daniel Mercer died during Blackwater.”
Mercer's breathing stopped.
“The man standing here was born Benjamin Cole.”
“No.”
It wasn't denial from a liar.
It was terror from a man watching his identity collapse.
Cole had helped Voss alter the beacon.
But after discovering civilians would be endangered, he tried to reverse the changes.
He joined Rescue Six.
He suffered severe head trauma.
Voss realized he could transform a liability into the perfect witness.
Daniel Mercer was dead.
Benjamin Cole was damaged.
Records were changed.
Memories were manipulated during recovery.
Cole became Mercer.
And eventually he believed it completely.
Thomas had saved him in the water.
That memory survived everything.
So did the wristband.
Mercer covered his face.
“I don't know who I am.”
May you like
Jonathan answered quietly.
“Then maybe you finally get to decide.”
