Chapter 20 - The Envelope Waiting At HomeRose's semester abroad was extraordinary.

She traveled.

Studied.

Made friends.

Called every Sunday.

She returned stronger than she had left.

A year later, she graduated with honors.

Darius cried through half the ceremony.

I cried through all of it.

Grandma attended.

Grandpa attended.

Savannah came.

Max came.

Even Kendra sat quietly near the end of our row.

Afterward, Rose allowed everyone into one photograph.

Not because the past had disappeared.

Because it no longer owned her.

That evening, we celebrated at home.

Rose raised a glass.

“To knowing when to leave.”

Everyone laughed.

Then she added:

“And knowing who will come looking for you.”

I couldn't speak.

Darius squeezed my hand.

It felt like an ending.

A good one.

But families rarely give you perfect endings.

Three days later, an envelope arrived.

No return address.

It was addressed to me.

Inside was a printed photograph from the airport where Rose had been stranded years earlier.

The photograph showed Rose searching through her backpack.

Max stood several feet behind her.

Kendra was near the gate.

Dad was farther away.

But there was another person in the photograph.

Someone none of us had ever mentioned.

A man standing beside Kendra.

They appeared to be talking.

On the back of the photograph, someone had written:

ASK KENDRA WHO HELPED HER CHANGE THE FLIGHT.

I read the sentence twice.

Then a third time.

Darius came into the kitchen.

“What is it?”

I handed him the photograph.

His expression changed.

“Do you recognize him?”

“No.”

But apparently Kendra did.

I picked up my phone.

For several seconds, my thumb hovered over her name.

Then another message appeared.

Unknown number.

One photograph.

This one was closer.

Kendra was handing something to the mysterious man.

Rose's passport.

Underneath were six words.

You still don't know what happened.

Darius looked at me.

I looked toward the framed graduation photograph on our mantel.

Rose was safe.

She was happy.

Whatever happened next would not take that away from her.

But someone had waited years to send these photographs.

And whoever they were, they clearly believed the story had never really ended.

I locked my phone.

Then I looked at Darius.

“Don't tell Rose yet.”

He nodded.

Outside, headlights moved slowly past our house.

They stopped.

For three seconds.

Then disappeared into the darkness.

I walked to the window.

The street was empty.

Behind me, my phone vibrated one final time.

May you like

Unknown number.

Now ask your sister why Rose was never supposed to reach that resort.
