Chapter 8 - Their Vacation Became Very ExpensiveMy relatives eventually found another hotel.

Not the beachfront resort.

A smaller property nearly forty minutes away.

Dad maxed out one credit card.

Kendra used another.

They purchased new return flights at peak last-minute prices.

Nobody died.

Nobody became homeless.

Nobody was truly stranded.

They simply had to pay for themselves.

Yet judging by their messages, one might have thought I had committed an international crime.

Dad accused me of financial manipulation.

Kendra called me vindictive.

Max posted online that “some relatives use money to control everyone.”

Darius showed me the post.

I laughed.

Then Rose saw it.

She didn't laugh.

She opened her phone.

For a moment I thought she might respond.

Instead, she blocked Max.

That small movement impressed me more than any angry speech could have.

“I don't owe him an explanation,” she said.

“No.”

“You taught me that.”

I shook my head.

“I think you taught me.”
