Chapter 10 - The Master Key

Three months later.
The early spring sun had melted the mountain snow, revealing the lush, emerald-green lawns of the Hawthorne Crest Resort. The Hudson River sparkled like crushed sapphires in the valley below, its waters rushing free of ice.
The grand lobby smelled of fresh beeswax, blooming white lilies, and roasted hazelnut coffee.
The brass fixtures had been polished until they shone like mirrors. The crystal chandeliers had been painstakingly cleaned, each prism catching the morning light and throwing rainbows across the travertine floor.
Behind the front desk stood Martha Higgins, wearing an immaculate black blazer with a gold lapel pin that read: *DIRECTOR OF HOSPITALITY OPERATIONS.*
Beside her, three young local women whom Garrison had unfairly fired were laughing as they checked in a family with two small children, handing the kids complimentary chocolate cookies baked fresh in the resort’s renovated pastry kitchen.
There were no velvet ropes. There were no armed guards. There were no sneering clerks checking the brand of a guest's luggage.
I stood on the mezzanine balcony overlooking the rotunda, holding a warm cup of tea, watching the life pulse through the building my mother had poured her soul into.
Behind me, soft footsteps padded across the Persian rug.
Lily ran up to the railing, her cheeks rosy with health, holding a large brass key attached to a heavy silk ribbon.
"Mommy! Look what Mrs. Higgins gave me!" Lily beamed, holding the key up to the sunlight.
"What is that, baby?" I asked, kneeling beside her and brushing a stray lock of hair behind her ear.
"She said it's the Master Key," Lily whispered in awe. "She said this key opens every single door in the entire castle, and nobody can ever lock us out again."
I smiled, my eyes stinging with warm, healing tears, and pulled my daughter close against my chest.
Through the cathedral windows, high above the manicured gardens, the resort’s flag fluttered proudly in the mountain breeze, bearing the Vance family crest and my mother’s favorite motto, carved in bronze for the world to see:

I kissed the top of Lily's head, took her small hand in mine, and together, we walked into our home.
