Chapter 2 - The Sunrise Audit

The grandfather clock in the grand rotunda of Hawthorne Crest struck precisely 7:45 AM.
The storm had passed, leaving behind a crisp, merciless winter sun that streamed through the two-story cathedral windows, illuminating the snow-dusted pine trees outside. The lobby was already bustling with wealthy socialites preparing for the Alpine Gala, bellhops in burgundy uniforms gliding across the marble, carrying leather luggage.
Julian Pierce stood behind the front desk, sipping an espresso from an artisanal porcelain cup, laughing with an attractive heiress checking out of the presidential suite.
"We look forward to hosting you again next winter, Miss Davenport," Julian purred, handing back her platinum card. "At Hawthorne Crest, perfection isn't an option. It’s our standard."
"Good to know," a voice rang out across the desk. "Let’s see how that standard holds up under federal employment law."
Julian froze. His cup stopped halfway to his lips.
I stepped up to the brass counter.
I was no longer wearing the salt-stained wool coat or the scuffed boots. I wore a tailored midnight-blue power suit, sharp Italian leather heels that clicked like gunshots against the marble floor, and my hair was swept back into a sleek, immaculate chignon. Beside me stood Lily, clean, warm, wearing her favorite navy coat, holding a small sketchbook in her hand. Flanking us were two armed private security contractors wearing black tactical suits, their expressions carved out of granite.
Julian blinked, his jaw working silently before a sneer broke across his pale face.
"You?" he scoffed, putting his cup down with a sharp clatter. "Are you out of your mind? I warned you last night. You don't come in here looking like... whatever this costume is. Security! Officer Miller, get this woman out of here before she disturbs—"
"Officer Miller isn't coming, Julian," a calm, booming voice echoed from the archway.
Paul Danvers stepped forward, flanked by two forensic accountants carrying identical silver briefcases. Paul pulled an official legal notice from his breast pocket and slapped it flat against the marble desk, directly over Julian’s reservation log.
"What is this garbage?" Julian spat, refusing to look down. "Do you have any idea who manages this property? Garrison Vance is upstairs right now finalizing the restructuring of this entire resort! If you think you can pull a scam—"
"Read the document, Julian," I said softly, stepping closer until I was inches from his face.
He hesitated, rattled by the absolute calm in my eyes. His gaze dropped to the embossed gold seal at the top of the parchment.
*THE HAWTHORNE CREST HOSPITALITY GROUP – ARTICLES OF ABSOLUTE OWNERSHIP.*
His eyes darted down the lines of legal text, scanning the probate court certification, the deed transfer, and finally stopping at the name printed in bold black ink at the bottom:
*Sole Proprietor and Chief Executive Officer: Clara Eleanor Vance.*
Julian’s face drained of every ounce of color. The arrogance evaporated from his eyes, replaced by a raw, suffocating terror. His mouth opened, closed, and opened again like a fish thrown onto dry land.
"You..." his voice cracked into a pathetic squeak. "You're Eleanor's... but you were wearing... you looked like..."
"I looked like a mother trying to put her sick child to bed after an eight-hour drive," I whispered, every word slicing through the morning air like a scalpel. "And you looked like a man who thought cruelty was a perk of employment."
"Miss Vance—I—I swear, the computer system—there was an error, someone flagged the name as fraudulent—"
"You didn't check the name, Julian," Lily chimed in innocently, looking up with her big brown eyes. "You told Mommy she belonged in a dumpster."
Several wealthy patrons turned around, gasping at the exchange. Whispers rippled through the lobby.
"Miss Vance, please, let’s go into the back office!" Julian pleaded, sweat breaking out across his forehead, drenching his stiff white collar. "I was only following directives! Mr. Garrison Vance personally instructed the desk to decline all unconfirmed check-ins! He said there were grifters trying to claim estate assets!"
"Is that why my reservation was cancelled under his private administrative login at ten o'clock last night?" I asked, pulling out the printed digital audit trail Paul had retrieved at four in the morning.
Julian gasped, stepping back until his spine slammed into the mahogany key rack.
"Pack your personal belongings," I said, my voice ringing clear and merciless through the vaulted lobby. "You have ten minutes to clear your locker. If your foot touches this marble after eight o'clock, my security team will escort you directly to the county jail for trespassing."
"You can't fire me!" Julian choked, his hands trembling violently. "Garrison hired me! He's the executive managing partner!"
"Garrison Vance owns three percent of non-voting stock," I said, stepping past the counter and pushing open the brass swinging gate. "I own ninety-seven. Which means as of twelve seconds ago, you are unemployed."
I didn’t look back to watch him crumble. I turned toward the grand elevators that led to the executive boardroom on the top floor.
"Paul," I commanded.
"Yes, Clara?"

"Call the locks team. Change every digital keycard code in this facility." I took Lily’s hand, feeling her small fingers squeeze mine with pride. "Let’s go see what my uncle is trying to sell."
