Chapter 9 - The Reckoning of Julian Pierce

The county holding facility smelled of damp concrete, rust, and cheap industrial floor cleaner.

Twenty-four hours had passed since the gala. The news cycle had been an unrelenting tidal wave: *SENATOR PIERCE ARRESTED IN LUXURY RESORT MURDER CONSPIRACY; ELEANOR VANCE EXHUMATION ORDER GRANTED; GARRISON VANCE CONFESSES TO EMBEZZLEMENT.*

I sat on a metal folding chair on one side of the bulletproof glass partition in the maximum-security visitation wing.

On the other side of the glass, the heavy steel door buzzed and swung open.

Julian Pierce shuffled into the room.

His slicked-back hair was greasy and matted with dried fire-extinguisher chemical. His tailored three-piece suit had been replaced by a bright orange polyester jumpsuit three sizes too large for his narrow frame. Heavy iron shackles clinked around his ankles and wrists, dragging against the scarred linoleum floor.

He looked at me through the glass, his eyes sunken, shadowed with dark purple circles, trembling from the shock of losing everything overnight.

He sat down heavily on the stool and picked up the black plastic telephone receiver with shaking, handcuffed fingers.

I picked up mine.

"You look different, Julian," I said softly, my voice devoid of mockery, filled only with cold finality. "The uniform doesn't quite have the same cut as the burgundy three-piece."

Julian swallowed hard, a dry, choking sound escaping his throat.

"Miss Vance..." he whispered, his voice cracking into a pathetic whimper. "Please. You have to tell the federal prosecutors I didn't know about the poison. I swear to God, I didn't know they killed your mother! My father told me... he told me she had a heart attack! He just told me to keep the East Wing clear and shred the arrival logs!"

"You stood in that basement with lighter fluid, Julian," I said, leaning closer to the glass. "You laughed when you set fire to the servers. You told me my child deserved to sleep in a dumpster."

"I was following orders!" he sobbed, tears cutting clean lines through the soot still ingrained in his cheeks. "He's my father! If I didn't do what he said, he was going to cut me out of the trust fund! He was going to leave me with nothing!"

"You *have* nothing, Julian," I replied. "This morning, the Department of Justice froze every domestic and offshore account associated with the Pierce family name. The trust fund doesn't exist anymore. Your father's legal defense team just dropped him because his retainer check bounced."

Julian gasped, his hands shaking so violently the telephone receiver rattled against the glass.

"No... no, that's impossible... he has accounts in the Caymans—"

"Those accounts were seized at six o'clock this morning under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act," I said calmly. "And as the primary victim of the property damage to Hawthorne Crest, my legal team has placed a commercial lien on every piece of real estate your family owns—including your father’s townhouse in Manhattan and your beach house in the Hamptons."

Julian stared at me, his eyes wide with a horror so complete it drained the last remnants of life from his pale face.

"Why are you here, Clara?" he whispered, his voice breaking. "Did you come here just to watch me drown?"

"No, Julian," I said, reaching into my purse and pulling out a small white paper receipt.

I pressed it flat against the glass so he could read the faded thermal ink.

*STARLIGHT MOTEL – ROUTE 9*

*ROOM 12: $64.00*

*PAYMENT STATUS: CASH – PAID IN FULL.*

"I came here to give you your bill," I said. "You judged me by my coat. You judged my daughter by her silence. You thought power belonged to the people who wore the gold badges, without realizing that real power is built by the people who lay the bricks."

Julian broke into silent, shuddering sobs, resting his forehead against the cold glass partition.

"Enjoy your stay, Julian," I whispered. "I hear the accommodations are permanent."

May you like

I hung up the phone, stood up, and walked out of the prison without looking back once.
