Chapter 15 - The Island of Salt and Bone

A single drop of icy seawater dripped from a vaulted stone ceiling, splashing against Emma’s bruised cheek.

She opened her eyes, fighting the nausea of heavy sedatives. She was strapped upright into a high-backed mahogany chair in the center of an immense, circular room carved directly out of coastal granite. Towering arched windows looked out into the thrashing black waves of the Pacific, where lightning veins split the purple clouds.

"You have your father’s stubborn chin, child," a melodious, terrifyingly calm voice echoed across the marble floor.

Eleanor Whitmore emerged from the shadows near a massive granite fireplace. She wore an ivory cashmere coat, not a hair out of place, holding a crystal glass of amber scotch. Two private security operatives in black combat suits and silenced submachine guns flanked her like marble statues.

"Where is my mother?" Emma rasped, her throat dry as sand.

Eleanor offered a faint, pitying smile as she approached, leaning against an antique oak desk strewn with yellowed shipping manifests and digital hard drives. "Your mother is an instrument of violence. Useful for empire-building, tragic when she mistakes herself for a shareholder. She thinks that little brass key she stole is a weapon. She doesn’t realize it is a signature."

Eleanor set her glass down and reached into an inlaid velvet box on the desk, lifting a heavy leather-bound ledger bound with silver clasps. In the center was a brass lock cylinder—an exact match to the key Rebecca carried.

"Your father did not die in a training accident in Helmand, Emma," Eleanor whispered, stepping closer, the scent of lavender and dry gin wafting off her. "He died because he realized the $700 million trust did not belong to the Whitmore Corporation. It belonged to the firstborn daughter of the direct lineage. That is not me. That was not him. That is you. Rebecca hid you under a forged birth certificate for twenty years. But to dissolve the foundation, we need the blood in your veins and the key in her pocket."

Emma clenched her teeth, staring into Eleanor’s pale eyes. "My mother is going to level this island."

Eleanor laughed softly, tapping Emma's jaw with cold fingers. "She has to survive the reefs first."
