Chapter 1 - The Message on the Marble

The marble floor was cold against my cheek, but the fire in my veins was boiling.

I couldn’t move. My fingers were splayed inches from the shattered crystal of my champagne flute, the pale liquid soaking into the hem of my dress. Above me, the amber chandeliers of the Grand Plaza hotel ballroom swung in sickening circles.

"Mom! Mommy, wake up!"

Maisie’s eight-year-old voice cut through the muffled roar of two hundred horrified wedding guests. She was on her knees beside me, her lilac flower-girl dress pooling around her, tiny hands clutching my shoulder.

"Step back, Maisie. Don’t touch her."

That was Helena Pierce. My new sister-in-law’s mother. The magenta silk of her designer gown rustled as she backed away, her chest heaving, the hand that had just cracked across my face still trembling at her side.

Everyone in that room thought Helena’s slap had taken me down. They thought the scandal of Grant’s high-society wedding was an enraged mother-in-law striking the groom's sister. But a slap doesn't make your tongue swell. A slap doesn't turn your lungs to wet concrete.

The poison had been in the glass. The slap had just shattered it.

Across the hall, my brother Grant barged through the crowd. His tuxedo was tailored to perfection, his jaw set in stone. He pushed past his weeping bride, Caroline, and dropped to one knee beside Maisie.

"Grant..." I tried to push the word past my lips. Nothing came out but a dry wheeze.

Maisie held out her hand to him. "Uncle Grant, I picked this up. It fell from the lady's bag."

A folded piece of cream cardstock lay on Maisie’s trembling palm. Grant took it. Caroline hovered over his shoulder, her bridal veil trembling. As Grant unfolded the note, the blood completely drained from Caroline’s face. She actually took a step back, clapping both hands over her mouth.

Grant’s eyes scanned the lines. I was close enough to read the crisp, printed block letters:

*C.B. — second glass after 9:15.*

*Keep her out of the ambulance until 10:00.*

*East service hall.*

*V.*

Grant looked up. His eyes didn't go to me. They locked onto Helena Pierce with lethal intensity.

"You did this?" Grant’s voice was dangerously low.

"Grant, wait—that’s not mine!" Helena gasped, terror replacing her haughty arrogance. "Someone planted that—"

Grant struck her. The blow sent Helena crashing backward into a linen-draped table. Stemware shattered. Women shrieked.

I thought Grant was defending me. I thought my brother was about to scoop me up, scream for a doctor, save my life.

Instead, Grant folded the paper, shoved it into his inner pocket, and turned his back on me. He didn’t call 911. He didn’t check my pulse. He strode toward the double oak doors leading to the corridor and vanished.

My heart hammered a desperate, erratic rhythm against my ribs.

Then, right beside my ear, nestled among the shards of broken glass, a phone screen flashed bright white.

It was an anonymous black burner. Not mine. Not Helena’s.

A notification banner popped up:

**Unknown:** *Why is she still alive?*

My breath hitched. The person who poisoned me was in this room, watching me bleed out on the marble.

Before I could blink away the dark spots creeping across my vision, the screen lit up again.

**Unknown:** *Finish it before the paramedics breach the lobby. Grant has the backup dose.*
