Chapter 17 - The Blind Spot

"Did you get the trace?" I yelled, spinning around to Miller.
Miller looked up from his tech specialist's monitor, shaking his head grimly. "She scrambled the routing through three satellite relays. The plane is heading southeast over international waters. Once they drop below radar coverage near the Bermuda triangle, we lose them."
"No," I said, slamming my hand onto David's mahogany desk. "No! She doesn't get to walk away with ninety million dollars while Helena bleeds out on a concrete floor!"
"Claire, international law—"
"Screw international law!" I shouted.
I looked at the blank stock certificates on the desk.
Why would Victoria have blank paper in David's private safe? David never kept blank documents in his personal vault. He was meticulous. Every piece of paper in that safe was indexed under a specific corporate ledger number.
I picked up the heavy brass key Caroline had given me at the hospital—the one she claimed was for the Grand Plaza service elevator.
I held it up to the fluorescent light.
Stamped into the brass along the edge of the key was a tiny, five-digit alphanumeric sequence:
*B-4092.*
Not a hotel room. Not an elevator bypass.
A safe deposit box number.
"Miller," I said, my heart pounding against my ribs. "Where does Bennett Capital keep its private banking vault?"
"The Delaware First Federal branch across the street," Miller said, his eyes widening. "Why?"
"Caroline didn't take the certificates on that plane," I said, realization detonating in my mind. "The weight limits on international charter flights require declared manifests for physical negotiable bearer bonds! If she carried ninety million in physical bearer stock onto that jet, customs would have seized it on the tarmac!"
The certificates weren't on the plane.
The certificates were still in the bank vault across the street.
"She couldn't access the vault until 9:00 AM when the bank opens," I said, checking my watch.
It was 8:15 AM.
"Then who is picking them up?" Miller asked.
"The only person left who has legal power of attorney to execute bearer bond withdrawals from Bennett Capital," I said, turning my eyes to the corner of the room.
Grant sat on the floor, his head down.
Beside his foot, half-hidden beneath his coat, his personal phone lit up with an incoming text.
**Caroline:** *The jet is in the air. The decoy worked. Go to the vault at 8:55. Don't be late.*
Grant wasn't an innocent, manipulated victim.

He was in on it with Caroline the entire time.
