Chapter 10 - The Safehouse

Forty minutes later, the sedan was hidden beneath a tarp behind an abandoned boat repair shop on the banks of the Delaware River.

My hands were shaking so hard I could barely wrap the adhesive bandage around the deep glass cut on my forearm.

Maisie sat on a wooden crate inside the drafty shed, wrapped in Miller’s dry police jacket, drinking water from a plastic bottle we’d found in the glove compartment. She hadn't cried once. She just stared at me with huge, solemn eyes that made my heart ache.

"Mommy," she whispered. "Is Uncle Grant bad?"

I knelt down in front of her, wiping a streak of rain and engine grease from her cheek. "Uncle Grant is sick, baby. He made some very bad choices, and people got hurt. But I am never going to let him touch you. Do you hear me? Never."

"What about Aunt Caroline?" Maisie asked. "She gave me this before we left the ballroom."

Maisie reached into her lavender satin purse—the tiny purse she had clutched all night—and pulled out a thumb drive encased in brushed steel.

Attached to the key ring was a handwritten tag: *For Claire. Chloe’s insurance.*

My breath caught.

Caroline hadn't tried to kill me at the hospital.

When she brought the syringe into my room, she was putting on a show for Briggs outside the door! The syringe was empty—she never uncapped it! She had slipped the drive to Maisie during the chaos on the dance floor before the slap even landed.

I plugged the drive into my tablet.

A single video file appeared, titled: *Vance_Confession_09-14.mp4.*

I tapped the screen.

A man with a bruised face and swollen lips sat in what looked like an executive boardroom chair. It was Vance—Helena’s personal assistant.

Behind the camera, a voice spoke. Not Grant’s.

A woman’s voice. Cold, authoritative, terrifying.

"State your name and purpose, Vance."

"My name is Vance Keller," the man stammered, terrified. "I was hired by Victoria Bennett."

*Victoria Bennett.*

My mother.
