Chapter 18 - The Final Confrontation

Grant looked up.
He saw me staring at the phone by his foot.
The remorse, the tears, the broken-brother routine—it all vanished from his face in an instant, replaced by a cold, sneering contempt that looked identical to our mother’s.
"You always were the smart one, Claire," Grant said, his voice dropping into a chilling monotone.
He didn't wait for Miller to react.
With blinding speed, Grant lunged upward with his uninjured arm, driving the hidden edge of a broken ceramic penholder he had palmed from the desk directly into the neck of the federal agent guarding him.
The agent choked, collapsing.
Grant grabbed the agent’s holstered firearm, fired two rapid shots that shattered the office window behind Miller, and threw himself through the fractured opening onto the maintenance gantry outside.
"Officer down!" Miller roared, drawing his weapon and returning fire through the shattered glass.
I didn't wait for Miller.
I ran.
I burst through the reception doors, sprinted down the emergency stairwell, taking the concrete steps three at a time, my knees screaming in agony, adrenaline burning through every nerve ending.
I hit the lobby doors just as Grant burst out of the building's side alley into the morning rain on Market Street.
He was limping, his shoulder bleeding, but he was sprinting directly toward the stone steps of the Delaware First Federal Bank across the plaza.
"Grant!" I screamed, chasing him through the morning commuters who shrieked and scattered as they saw the blood on his shirt and the gun in his hand.
The bank doors were just being unlocked by the branch manager.
Grant shoved the elderly man backward through the brass revolving doors, stumbling into the grand marble lobby.
I burst in right behind him.
"Get down! Everybody get down!" Grant screamed, waving the stolen Glock at the terrified tellers behind the counter. "Open the vault! Open Box B-4092 right now or I start executing people!"
"Grant, it's over!" I yelled, stepping into the center of the lobby, hands raised, keeping his attention locked entirely on me.
Grant spun around, the barrel of his gun pointing straight at my face.
Behind the thick glass of the security desk, the silent alarms were already flashing amber.
"It’s not over, Claire!" Grant screamed, his eyes wild, spit flying from his lips. "Ninety million dollars! Do you know what kind of power that is? Do you know what Caroline and I can build with that? We can buy a whole country! We can disappear!"
"Caroline isn't waiting for you, Grant," I said, taking a slow, steady step forward.
"Shut up!"
"Listen to me!" I shouted, my voice echoing off the vaulted marble ceiling. "Check your phone! The charter jet dropped its transponder over the Atlantic ten minutes ago! Caroline isn't flying to the Dominican Republic to meet you. She and Chloe are flying to Zurich to dump your holding company into bankruptcy!"
"She loves me!" Grant shrieked. "We planned this together!"
"She used you to kill our mother!" I yelled back, tears streaming down my face. "She used you to poison me! The moment you walk out of this bank with those bonds, Caroline’s offshore lawyers are filing an anonymous tip with the FBI naming you as the sole perpetrator of the wedding poisoning and Victoria's murder!"
Grant’s hand began to shake. "No... no, she wouldn't..."
"She left her own mother to die in a boiler room, Grant!" I pleaded, taking another step. "Do you really think she cares about you? You’re the cleanup crew. You’re the dead man walking."
Grant looked down at the brass key in his bleeding palm.
Then, his eyes shifted to the large monitor on the bank’s wall, which was broadcasting the morning news.
A breaking news banner crawled across the bottom of the screen:
