Chapter 13 - The Cage of the Serpent

The high-security federal penitentiary in upstate New York felt less like a prison and more like an underground bunker engineered to hold monsters. Clara walked through three separate blast doors, the metal clanging behind her with the finality of a tomb. Every instinct screamed at her to turn around, to take her children and flee to the other side of the planet. But Marcus had made it clear: you cannot outrun a predator that owns the terrain. You have to cut off its head.

Separated by bulletproof glass in the subterranean interrogation booth, Eleanor Sterling sat waiting.

She wore an orange jumpsuit, but she wore it like an imperial robe. Her silver hair was neatly pinned back, her posture rigidly upright. Despite the handcuffs chaining her wrists to the steel table, her pale blue eyes flashed with that familiar, murderous arrogance.

"You look tired, Clara," Eleanor purred into the telephone receiver, her voice crackling through the intercom with velvet malice. "Motherhood under the threat of sudden execution must be so dreadfully exhausting."

Clara slammed both palms against the partition, the impact rattling the reinforced frame. The prison guard in the corner stiffened, but Clara didn't break Eleanor’s cold, mocking stare.

"Call them off," Clara said, her voice dropping into a deadly, razor-sharp whisper. "You sent a sniper to watch my children. You left a dead drop at our safehouse. If you touch Toby or Leo, I will personally ensure every hidden asset, every offshore shell company, and every Swiss account tied to your name is liquidated and broadcast to the Department of Justice."

Eleanor threw back her head and laughed—a dry, rattling sound that raised the hair on Clara’s arms.

"You foolish, peasant girl," Eleanor sneered, leaning in so close her breath fogged the glass. "You think I sent that note? You think I care enough about your miserable existence to hire common thugs when I am orchestrating my own appeal through three Supreme Court justices?"

Clara’s heart skipped a beat. "What are you talking about?"

"The Sterling fortune didn't begin with me, and it doesn't end with a few maritime corruption charges," Eleanor hissed, her smile vanishing, replaced by something genuinely terrified that Clara had never seen in the matriarch’s eyes before. "Julian stole from people far worse than me, Clara. He took the Black Ledger."

"The Black Ledger?"

"The offshore manifest of the Kraken Consortium," Eleanor whispered, her eyes darting nervously toward the guard. "The shadow cartel that financed my shipping empire. Julian took the cryptographic keys and hid them. They believe you have them. And unlike me, Clara... they don't want you disgraced. They don't want you broke. They want your flesh pulled from your bones until you give them the drive."

May you like

Clara felt the floor tilt beneath her. "Julian never gave me a drive."

"Then you and my grandsons are already dead," Eleanor said coldly, picking up her shackled hands. "Because the Consortium doesn't leave survivors. And the man hunting you right now? He was Julian’s mentor. And he hasn't lost a target in thirty years."
