Chapter 20 - The Voice from the Deep

The plunge was instant darkness, a violent shock of freezing Atlantic saltwater that knocked the breath from Clara’s lungs. The roar of the ocean surrounded her, pulling her down into the familiar, suffocating cold.

*Not this time,* her mind screamed. *I belong to the living!*

The buoyant survival vest engaged, rocketing Clara back to the surface. She breached the water, gasping for air, her hands immediately checking the sealed harness on her chest. Leo was screaming—a glorious, beautiful, healthy wail that pierced the storm.

Twenty feet away, Marcus surfaced, spitting water, his arm wrapped firmly around Toby, who was coughing but fiercely holding his head above the waves.

"I’ve got the boat!" Marcus yelled, fighting against the current as he dragged Toby toward the RHIB, which had miraculously survived the rockfall, anchored by its heavy sea drogue.

Ten grueling minutes later, they pulled themselves over the rubber gunwales, collapsing onto the deck of the inflatable boat. The lighthouse on Dead Man’s Shoal was gone. Only a jagged stump of stone remained, swallowed by the roaring black tide.

Clara lay on her back, clutching Leo and pulling Toby tight against her side. They were bruised, bleeding, half-frozen, but they were alive.

Marcus fired up the outboard engines, steering the vessel away from the deadly shoals toward the mainland harbor. He wiped the saltwater from his eyes, letting out a long, ragged exhale of survival. "It's over. Reyes is dead. We have the Black Ledger. We hand this directly to the Director of National Intelligence. Eleanor, the Consortium, all of them... they’re finished."

Toby sat up slowly, the silver St. Christopher medal clutched tightly in his fist. He looked down at the satellite console on the boat’s dashboard, which had suddenly begun flashing with an incoming encrypted military signal.

"Marcus?" Toby pointed. "The screen."

Marcus frowned, tapping the receiver. The encrypted frequency was supposed to be completely dead.

A live audio feed connected. There was no static this time. The connection was crisp, pristine, transmitting from an ultra-secure deep-sea fiber line.

A voice spoke. It was not the cold, modulated voice of the Consortium’s Architect.

It was a voice Clara would recognize across a thousand lifetimes. A voice that had whispered love into her ears under starry nights in New York. A voice that had promised her forever.

*"Clara..."* the voice spoke softly, ragged with emotion and exhaustion. *"If you’re hearing this... you survived Reyes. And Toby brought you the ledger."*

Clara froze. The blood stopped in her veins. Her entire body turned to ice.

"Julian?" she whispered, her lips trembling uncontrollably.

*"I couldn't come home, Clara,"* Julian Vance’s voice crackled through the speaker, accompanied by the low, mechanical hum of life support machines. *"They made me disappear to protect you. But the Ledger isn't a financial file. It’s an activation code. And the man who ordered Eleanor to throw you overboard... he's sitting across the table from me right now. Clara, whatever you do... do NOT bring the drive to Washington. He’s waiting for you."*

A heavy gunshot echoed through the transmission.

Then, a new voice took the line—cold, cultured, and terrifyingly close:

May you like

*"Good evening, Mrs. Vance. Your husband was right about one thing. I've been waiting for you for a very long time."*

The screen went black. The boat rocked silently in the midnight ocean.
