Chapter 18 - The Reckoning of Reyes

Reyes dropped his weapon, clutching his shattered shoulder as he fell back against the cellar wall. Blood dripped through his fingers, staining the ancient stone.
"Clara..." Reyes wheezed, a grotesque grin spreading across his pale lips. "You... you actually pulled the trigger."
Marcus moved down the stairs like a ghost, kicking Reyes’s fallen firearm across the floor and pinning the Admiral against the wall with the barrel of his rifle jammed beneath the man’s chin.
Toby scrambled across the floor, diving into his mother’s arms. Clara dropped to her knees, wrapping her arms tightly around Toby, kissing his hair, his bruised forehead, her tears washing away the grime on his cheeks. "I'm here, baby. I'm here. You're safe."
"Mom!" Toby reached into his pocket, pulling out the micro-SD card. "The necklace! Dad hid the Black Ledger inside my necklace! I kept it safe!"
Marcus glanced down, his eyes widening. "My God. Julian had it on Toby the whole time."
Reyes coughed, spitting blood onto the stone floor, his laughter echoing eerily in the damp room. "You think... you think that tiny piece of silicon saves you? You think this ends with me?"
Clara picked up baby Leo, holding him tight against her chest while keeping Toby behind her. She walked over to where Marcus had Reyes pinned.
"Who ordered Julian's death?" Clara demanded, her eyes piercing through the broken Admiral. "Eleanor signed the papers, but who pulled the strings?"
"The Consortium is bigger than shipping companies, Clara," Reyes hissed, his breathing turning shallow. "The ledger names everyone. Senators. Prime ministers. Defense contractors. Eleanor was just an arrogant socialite who thought she was running the world. But the real Architect... he never lets loose ends breathe."
"Give me a name!" Clara shouted.
"The radio..." Reyes choked out, nodding weakly toward the shortwave rig on the upper floor. "He’s listening right now. He’s been listening to every breath you take."
Suddenly, the shortwave radio upstairs crackled with static, the noise cascading down the stone stairwell like a demonic broadcast. A voice, digitally modulated and chillingly smooth, resonated through the speaker:

*"Admiral Reyes. You have failed your final evaluation. Protocol Scythe has been initiated."*
Marcus’s eyes widened in sheer horror. "The charges! He’s blowing the foundation!"
