Chapter 3 - The Ghost of Julian Vance

The master salon of the *Sovereign Lady* was a shrine to old-money excess. Walnut-paneled walls lined with original Impressionist oils, buttery cream leather sofas, and a crystal chandelier that clinked softly with the rolling of the swells. But tonight, the room felt like a gilded prison.

Marcus had barricaded Clara and Toby inside the secondary stateroom on the lower deck before Captain Vance could execute Eleanor’s orders. He had jammed the electronic door lock from the inside and severed the intercom line. Outside, the storm had fully arrived; rain lashed against the reinforced portholes like bullets, and the yacht pitched violently in eight-foot seas.

Clara sat wrapped in three heated blankets, sipping warm water that Toby had brought her from the bathroom sink. Her body ached down to the marrow, but her mind was racing through the corridors of the past.

Julian.

She closed her eyes and saw her late husband's face. Julian Vance-Sterling had been everything his mother wasn't: warm, fiercely protective, an investigative journalist who despised the dark origins of his family’s shipping empire. When Julian had met Clara at a charity benefit in Boston, she was a widowed preschool teacher raising her two-year-old son, Toby, after her first husband had died in a factory collapse. Julian hadn't cared about social status. He had legally adopted Toby, given him the Sterling name, and loved him without reservation.

*“My mother is a disease, Clara,”* Julian had warned her three weeks before his disappearance. She could still hear the raw panic in his voice as they sat in their private apartment in Manhattan. *“She runs this family like a cartel. The shipping routes, the private terminals in the Caribbean... it’s not just cargo, Clara. It’s dirty. Blood money. And I found the ledgers. If I take this to the Department of Justice, she loses everything. Her status, her name, the entire Sterling empire.”*

At the time, Clara had begged him to let it go. *“We have Toby, Julian. We have a life. Walk away from the money.”*

*“I can't,”* Julian had replied, kissing her forehead, his eyes haunted. *“Because if I don't put her behind bars, she will eventually come for you. She will never allow an outsider to hold the Sterling inheritance.”*

A week later, Julian had vanished off the coast of Block Island.

The grief had shattered Clara. Three weeks after the funeral, she had discovered she was pregnant. When she revealed the news to Eleanor, the older woman hadn't smiled. She hadn't hugged her. She had stared at Clara’s stomach with an expression of cold, venomous revulsion, murmuring: *“How terribly inconvenient.”*

Then came the "accident" two months ago. A hit-and-run driver in a black SUV had struck Clara in a pedestrian crossing, shattering her pelvis and legs, confining her to a wheelchair. The police never found the driver. Eleanor had graciously insisted that Clara and Toby join her aboard the family yacht for an "extended recovery cruise" in international waters.

*She brought me out here to finish the job,* Clara realized, her heart thumping against her ribs like a trapped bird. *There was no hit-and-run driver. It was Eleanor. It was always Eleanor.*

The electronic lock on the stateroom door clicked softly.

Toby jumped behind Clara’s chair, his small fingers grabbing a heavy brass paperweight from the desk. Clara’s breath caught in her throat.

The door slid open. Marcus slipped into the room, soaking wet, his dark tactical jacket dripping onto the carpet. He quickly locked the deadbolt behind him and placed a heavy metal wedge under the door frame.

"Marcus," Clara breathed, exhaling the breath she had been holding. "What’s happening out there? Where is Eleanor?"

"Eleanor is in the primary suite with Captain Vance," Marcus said in a low, urgent voice. He knelt in front of Clara, his expression grim. "The yacht’s satellite communications have been mysteriously disabled. Vance told the crew it was the storm. That’s a lie. He cut the feed to keep my distress signal from transmitting our actual GPS coordinates."

"Why would the Captain help her?" Clara asked, tears welling in her eyes. "He’s known Julian since he was a baby!"

"Because Arthur Vance isn't just the captain, Clara," Marcus said, leaning in. "Thirty years ago, Vance was the second officer on a container ship owned by Eleanor’s father. A ship that went down in the South Atlantic under very suspicious circumstances, netting the Sterlings a three-hundred-million-dollar insurance settlement that rebuilt their dynasty. Vance is tied to Eleanor by blood and blood money. If she goes down for murder, he goes down for life."

Marcus pulled a small, waterproof drive from his vest pocket and handed it to Clara.

"What is this?" she asked, her fingers closing around the cold plastic.

"Julian gave it to me," Marcus replied softly.

Clara stared at him, her breath hitching. "You... you knew Julian?"

May you like

"I didn't just know him, Clara," Marcus whispered, his eyes dark with an unhealed wound. "Julian hired me six months before he vanished. I’m not private yacht security. I was working with him. And Julian didn't drown at Block Island."
