Chapter 20 - THE SILVER SEAL

That evening, after everyone left, Chloe carried her sleeping daughter upstairs.

She kissed her forehead and placed her gently inside the crib.

“Goodnight, little warrior.”

Downstairs, rain tapped softly against the windows.

Daniel had fallen asleep on the sofa.

Chloe smiled.

Life had become beautifully ordinary.

Then the doorbell rang.

She looked at the clock.

11:47 P.M.

No one stood outside.

Only a package.

Small.

White.

Chloe carried it into the kitchen.

There was no return address.

Her smile disappeared when she turned it over.

Silver wax.

The same seal.

Her hands began trembling.

She broke it.

Inside was a photograph.

Arthur Vance stood beside Rebecca Hale.

Michael Bennett stood behind them.

And beside Michael was a woman Chloe had never seen.

The woman was pregnant.

On the back, someone had written:

CHLOE WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO FIND OUT.

Her breath stopped.

A second piece of paper slipped from the envelope.

It contained only one sentence.

Rebecca Hale had two children.

Chloe stared at it.

Upstairs, her daughter slept peacefully.

Outside, thunder rolled over the distant Virginia hills.

Daniel appeared in the doorway.

“What happened?”

Chloe slowly handed him the photograph.

He studied it.

Then his face changed.

“Chloe…”

“What?”

Daniel pointed toward the mysterious pregnant woman.

“I know her.”

Chloe’s heartbeat accelerated.

“Who is she?”

Daniel looked at his wife.

And for the first time in a year, Chloe saw the same terror in his eyes that had filled Room 402.

“She came to see my father the night before he died.”

Silence filled the house.

The storm outside grew louder.

Chloe looked again at the final sentence.

Rebecca Hale had two children.

The nightmare was over.

Her daughter was safe.

Her marriage was healing.

Her family had finally found peace.

But somewhere beyond the warm windows of their home, another member of Arthur Vance’s bloodline might still be alive.

And whoever had delivered the silver-sealed envelope knew exactly where Chloe lived.

She walked toward the window.

Across the rain-darkened street, a black car sat beneath a dead streetlamp.

Its headlights switched on.

Then it slowly drove away.

Chloe held the photograph against her chest.

She was no longer the frightened woman trapped behind a hospital door.

Whatever truth came next, she would face it standing.

Behind her, her daughter laughed softly in her sleep.

Chloe looked upstairs and smiled.

The Vance family had survived its darkest secret.

But its oldest secret had only just knocked on the door.

May you like
