Chapter 15 - The Man from the Deep

"Julian, behind you!" Maya screamed, lunging across the kitchen floor.

The glass shattered in an explosive cascade of glittering shards as the man stepped through the frame.

Julian spun on his heel, but the stranger was impossibly fast.

A leather-gloved hand clamped down on Julian's wrist, redirecting the Glock toward the ceiling.

*Crack!*

The gunshot blew a chunk of plaster out of the rafters, the muzzle flash blinding the dark room for a fraction of a second.

The stranger drove his elbow brutally into Julian’s throat, knocking him backward into the dining table.

The heavy mahogany table split down the center with a deafening crack.

Julian hit the floor hard, gasping for air as his weapon skidded across the slick hardwood floor toward Maya’s knees.

Maya didn't think. Instinct took over.

She threw herself forward, snatching the cold steel grip of the gun into her hands.

She scrambled to her knees, raising the weapon with trembling arms, aiming straight at the intruder's chest.

"Don't move!" she yelled, her voice raw and cracking with adrenaline. "I swear to God I will pull this trigger!"

The man stood completely still among the shards of rain-slicked glass.

The storm howled through the broken sliding door, soaking the curtains and sending cold spray across the room.

The man slowly raised both hands to shoulder height.

He smiled—a chilling, charming grin that made Maya’s stomach turn completely upside down.

"You have excellent reflexes, Maya," the man said smoothly. "Julian always did have good taste in survivors."

"Who the hell are you?" Maya demanded, her finger tightening against the curved trigger.

"Arthur Sterling," the man said softly, bowing his head with mock gentility.

"Arthur Sterling is dead!" Maya screamed over the roar of the ocean outside. "He drowned twenty years ago!"

"That was the official narrative, wasn't it?" Arthur murmured, his eyes glittering in the gloom.

"A billionaire who vanishes at sea leaves behind a fortune, a grieving widow, and an empire for his son."

He took a slow half-step forward.

"Don't take another step!" Maya warned, thumbing the safety off with a loud click.

"Maya, listen to me," Arthur said, his tone entirely reasonable, as if negotiating a contract in a boardroom.

"Did you really believe Victoria pushed you off that yacht out of petty jealousy?"

Julian groaned on the floor, struggling to pull himself up onto his knees, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth.

"Maya... don't listen to him..." Julian rasped, clutching his bruised throat.

"Victoria pushed you because she discovered who you really are," Arthur continued, ignoring Julian completely.

"She found out that your mother wasn't just an art teacher from Queens."

Maya felt the floor sway beneath her feet, a vertigo so intense she nearly dropped the firearm.

"What are you talking about?" she whispered.

"Ask your beloved Julian," Arthur smiled, pointing a finger at his son on the floor.

"Ask him why he tracked you down in Brooklyn. Ask him why he made sure you married him before the probate closed."

The front door creaked open behind Maya, and the smell of expensive French perfume cut through the salt air.

Victoria Sterling walked into the foyer, wearing a crisp camel-hair coat, unbothered by the rain.

She stood beside Deputy Vance, who held a twelve-gauge tactical shotgun leveled at Maya’s spine.

"Lower the weapon, Maya," Victoria commanded in her cold, familiar aristocratic drawl.

"Or my nephew will paint this lovely cottage with whatever passes for your brains."

Maya stood frozen between two monsters, the gun heavy and useless in her shaking hands.

She looked down at Julian, who remained on his knees, his head hanging low in defeat.

He wasn't fighting anymore.

He wasn't trying to protect her.

He was looking at the floorboards, whispering a single word over and over again into the dark:

May you like

"Forgive me."
