Chapter 2 - The Aftermath in Silence

The master stateroom of the Seraphina smelled of expensive mahogany, damp linen, and lingering panic.
Maya sat wrapped in three thick wool blankets at the foot of the massive king-sized bed, staring blankly at her trembling hands.
The water had stopped dripping from her hair, but the chill had settled deep into her bones, a cold that no amount of fabric could fix.
Julian stood by the porthole, watching the dark, rolling expanse of the Atlantic.
He had stripped off his ruined tuxedo jacket and bow tie, his white dress shirt unbuttoned at the collar, revealing the tight muscles of his throat.
The yacht was turning around, its course redirected toward the private Sterling estate in Montauk.
No one had knocked on their door since they locked it.
The crew knew better, and the terrified guests were keeping their distance, undoubtedly whispering in terrified huddles down in the grand salon.
"They're going to call the lawyers," Maya whispered, her voice rough and dry.
"Let them," Julian replied without turning around.
His voice was terrifyingly calm, stripped of any warmth, carrying the heavy weight of a man who had finally crossed a line from which there was no return.
Maya looked up at his back.
"She tried to kill me, Julian."
"I know."
"She didn't just push me out of frustration. She waited until we were alone, and she looked... she looked like she wanted to watch me drown."
Julian finally turned, his dark eyes locking onto hers.
There was no hesitation in his gaze now, no lingering filial guilt, only a grim, protective resolve.
He crossed the room in two long strides and knelt in front of her on the carpet.
He took her cold hands between his warm palms, rubbing them gently.
"She’s spent my entire life believing she owns everything with the Sterling name attached to it," Julian said quietly.
"She thought she owned you, too."
"She used to," Julian admitted, his thumb tracing her knuckles.
"Not anymore. Not after tonight."
"What happens when we dock?" Maya asked, fear tightening her chest.
"The police will be waiting, courtesy of my security detail," Julian said flatly.
"Wait, you called the police on your own mother?"
"She attempted murder, Maya," Julian said, as if stating the weather.
"She pushed my wife off a moving yacht into freezing water. The fact that she shares my DNA is no longer my concern."
Maya stared at him, realizing the immense magnitude of what he was sacrificing.
The Sterling empire was built on legacy, reputation, and absolute control.
By arresting his mother publicly, Julian was blowing up his entire world.
"Your mother will destroy you in the press," Maya warned.
"She’ll try," Julian said, a cold, humorless smile touching the corner of his lips.
"She’s underestimated me for the last time. My father built this company, but Eleanor turned it into a gilded cage. I’m burning it down."
A sharp knock at the heavy mahogany door broke the tense silence.
Both of them flinched.
Julian stood up, towering over the room, and walked to the door.
He pulled it open an inch, revealing Marcus, his head of security, a towering man with a perpetually broken nose and an expression carved from granite.
"Mr. Sterling," Marcus murmured, keeping his voice low.
"The Coast Guard cutter is meeting us three miles off Montauk. The local precinct has been briefed. Mrs. Sterling is currently confined to the Captain’s quarters, under guard. She’s screaming about disinheriting us both."
"Let her scream," Julian said coldly.
"Is the press aware?"
"We managed to confiscate phones from the guests who tried to record the fallout, but a few clips made it to the cloud. It’s going to be a bloodbath online by morning."
"Control what you can. Contain the rest," Julian ordered.
"Yes, sir. And... congratulations on the wedding."
Marcus offered a grim, sympathetic nod before stepping back.
Julian closed the door and leaned his forehead against the wood, letting out a long, shuddering breath.
The silence rushed back in, heavy and suffocating.
Maya stood up, dropping the blankets, and walked over to him.
She placed a hand gently on his chest, feeling the frantic, heavy beat of his heart beneath the thin cotton shirt.
"We’re going to get through this," Maya whispered.
Julian opened his eyes, looking down at her with a raw vulnerability he rarely showed the world.
He wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her flush against him, burying his face in her neck.
"I’m sorry," he murmured against her skin.
"I brought you into this nightmare. I should have protected you from her years ago."
"You jumped in after me," Maya reminded him softly, her fingers tangling in his dark hair.
"You saved my life."
May you like
"I would burn the world down before I let anyone hurt you, Maya," Julian whispered fiercely.
Outside, the engines hummed a steady, relentless rhythm, carrying them toward a dawn that would change their lives forever.
